Photography Gadgets

Well the iPad came in on Saturday, but I was too busy to play around with it. You do have to go through an iTunes session with your computer before you can even get it going.

So what's the iPad mean for me? Well I haven't figured out what else to do with it, but the main reason for jumping in so soon was the ability to display photos and videos. Mainly as a Photographer or Videographer on the hustle, in my opinion this is a definite alternative to showcase your portfolio. Younger clients are used to viewing photos and videos on the internet, so this little gadget is a sure fire way to get yourself some extra sit in time.

I tried carrying it with me today while I grabbed a sandwich over at ToGos, and it was the most akward thing. I didn't receive the leather case yet (Apple ships that seperately), so it wasn't something you want to just throw onto the counter. It's very slippery so sweaty hands is going to be apparent on the screen. It was difficult for me to accept my sandwich and sign a credit card receipt while holding the iPad. So fellas, if you plan on using something like this, it's not something you can throw in your back pocket. Sure a case will help you to lay it down on some down and dirty surfaces, but expect to start carrying a Murse (Man Purse). I'm not too fond of it as something I would carry around with me, at best it would sit in the car until needed. The iPhone still rocks (AT&T service sucks though).

Don't believe the hype on how many iPads were sold just over the weekend. Similar to Tickle Me Elmo or Cabbage Patch dolls, they got picked up by iPad Scalpers with inflated prices. One of the ways they can capitalize on this, is to ship overseas or internationally where the iPad hasn't been released yet. So for the company that's responsible for tallying up reports on sales, who's tallying up the amount of iPads that just ended back up for sale on eBay and Craigslist for inflated prices? Technically they aren't really being sold to be used right now. We'll see how that playing field levels out. As for now it looks like you can still order them and inventory is still good at regular prices.

If you're wondering how I go places with the iPad, i'm rocking the Verizon MiFi device. It's basically a mobile broadband router that you can share with other Wireless devices.

Update!! You Can Find the Popular 126 LED DSLR Video Light Kit Here!!

Holy moly. I posted about a 126 LED DSLR Video light not so long ago, and everyone's been thanking me for that tip. The only problem was if you wanted a great price, you had to deal with Hong Kong shipping which is umm..let's just say VERY SLOW. Today i'm ordering a few more for some friends, and I found this awesome USA seller. (Means faster shipping!). This USA seller has sold several, has gotten awesome feedback, and sells it for cheaper than the Hong Kong one I bought before. Grab a 126 LED Dimmable DSLR Video light from USA seller now! Awesome!!

It's quite a hassle to keep track of charged and uncharged batteries if you're relying on the power to get you through your next Project. I’ve been using these Sanyo Eneloops for years, and they are by far the best Rechargeable batteries i've ever used. Normally rechargeable batteries aren't recommended in certain devices, and if left for just a short period of time, they lose power. Sure you can wait 4-8 hours recharging them to use them again, but in a few weeks (without using them) they will still lose power.

The Sanyo Eneloops are designed to be a different type of rechargeable and can even maintain up to 90% of their charge if sitting for up to 1 Year!. I've never tried that claim, but i've never had a problem with dead batteries either. They can run a bit high in retail stores, but Amazon and B&H both have some of the cheapest prices for these Eneloops.

Video Details from Fabio Cunha:
A time-lapse experiment. 4020 shots used from more than 8000 shots. 1 shot for every 2 seconds interval. Canon 7D with Tamron 17-50mm 2.8. Cheap intervalometer and a crappy tripod.

I'm going to start doing this more often and share videos I like on my blog. Vimeo user Fabio Cunha created this Timelapse video of Los Angeles. Fabio messaged me back on my question and provides me with the exact Timelapse Intervalometer (Timelapse Remote) that was used in the video above for the Canon 7D. You can find the Intervalometer model below.

As some of you might have read, I purchased the GoPro HD Video Camera specifically for underwater use during my vacation (coming in a few weeks). Hopefully i'll do an underwater review video while i'm out there.

Being the gadget geek that I am, I just realized i'm going to need a better camera case to fly with. It's definitely got to be a carry on roller case, i'm not crazy enough to 'Check in' any of my camera gear! Pelican is a top brand for camera cases. This Pelican 1510 case seems awesome, and at the price it's pretty much a no brainer for me. Why did I always associate Pelican as $500 + company? This roller I think will do the job for my travels, and while working gigs around the city.

batteries canon t2i 550d

These Canon 550D T2i Batteries LP-E8 are sooo cheap.

One of the decisions you'll need to make about buying your video DSLR is all the accessories you're going to need to help you shoot your projects. Compared to the $80 dollar OEM batteries for the 7D, the Canon T2i 550D batteries are chump change. I've already run low quite a few times with the single battery on the T2i, but after seeing these prices, it's time to place some orders. I've had some awesome luck with aftermarket batteries, so i'm thinking about trying these $6.99 Free Shipping aftermarkets on the T2i.

I was in Hawaii with the Canon 5D Mark II + 24-70mm F/2.8 and Circular Polarizer last year when I shot this. I was about to trash this video, but then remembers a few friends who had questions "Is a Polarizer worth it?, What do they do?" So here it is peeps and others who might be interested in the Before and After use of Polarizers on Lenses. The video shows the difference in how much contrast and saturation you can obtain. This is not the same as an ND filter that simply blocks light. These circular polarizers are designed to block light from a certain direction, so you turn them in front of the lens depending on the situation. Yes you can use these in combination with ND filters. These are also recommended with normal video camcorders and point and shoot cameras that can accept filters. These are not just for DSLR video and photo cameras. You just have to remember to get the right size for your lens.
