DSLRevolt WORKSHOP / PHOTODAYS ROVINJ / AUDI from Marko Butrakovic on Vimeo.

Today's the day I may be signing a lease for warehouse space in the Bay Area. I've collected quite a bit of equipment over the last year, and networking with other Photographers / Videographers has required me to have an actual 'creative' space to setup shop. One of the ideas of using this new warehouse space would be to hold DSLR workshops where we invite a DSLR Professional or Professional DSLR team in to manage a small class and tackle a very specific project. This will all be built from scratch where everyone can contribute to ideas in storyboarding, coming up with the shot list, taking hands shooting with the different equipment, and to final editing. Think of that TV show 'Monster Garage' but for DSLR shooters. Throw a team of people into the warehouse, give them a project, and see what comes of it.

I started poking around for ideas on DSLR workshops, and really enjoyed how this video was put together. Seems like a really fun thing to tackle and I might just have to give the local BMW, Porsche, or Mercedes dealerships a ring.

Music video shot on (2) Canon 5D Mark II's. Here's the final version of a project I was invited to hang out with. A friend of mine told me they had plans to shoot a music video (all DSLR) at a San Francisco residence, so he invited me to check it out and bring some of my gear. This music video was for the artist 'Sherlock Tones' on a song featuring Terra Rothman titled 'Distant Strangers'.

The fairly large crew on set were kind enough to let me shoot along side as 'Camera B', with my Canon 5D Mark II and I was able to provide a few nice lenses that ended up being used quite frequently. Lenses used were primarily the Canon 100mm Macro IS F/2.8 (my new one), 85mm F/1.2, Canon 50mm F/1.4, and I believe Canon 24mm was on hand. There was a RedRock EyeSpy deluxe with Follow Focus on hand, but many of the shots were handheld or Tripod, and also the $99 slider played a very small role. You can catch some of the BTS footage shot by Warren during the music video shoot, and all cast and crew credit information can be found at this Vimeo link.

Thanks to all the guys who let me hang out. Hopefully I wasn't too much in the way of all the production, and helped contribute a little something to a very awesome shoot!

I'm not home just yet to play with this thing, but wifey grabbed a few snapshots via Sprint Evo (cellphone). I received the Black Sony NEX-5 with 16mm Lens, the unit is found here at BHPHOTOVIDEO.com. Can't wait to run home and dig into the user manual. LOL, OK i'm lying..who reads manuals? I'm just going to push a bunch of buttons until I figure it out. Hopefully there's a factory reset somewhere...

For now check out a nice teaser video about the Sony NEX cameras.

Most of you might remember Shane Hurlbut as the DP Christian Bale went Psycho on during the filming of Terminator Salvation. If you need a refresher, check out this YouTube clip for the audio meltdown. [that issue has since been resolved].

Shane Hurlbut - Director of Photographer talks a little bit about the seeing the footage from a Canon 5D Mark II for the very first time. Below are two other videos about a short film created completely with the Canon DSLR. You may have caught 'The Last Three Minutes' video online, but you may not have caught some of the Behind the Scenes footage. Check it out for a bit more appreciation of how these DSLR's are just game changers....

Here's the final piece titled 'The Last Three Minutes'

sf-crawfish-boil

Yo! Big ups to Waylon from Vimeo for cutting this video!! The 7th annual San Francisco Crawfish boil was fun and the Crawfish was off the hook. The weather was sunny and in the 90's at the Marina Green (lucky day).

While there, I got to meet up with the well known San Francisco Photographer JJ Casas. He was there taking out his lady for her birthday ( Happy B-Day Cher !). More coverage of the 7th Annual San Francisco Crawfish festival can be found on JJ's blog here: https://jcasasphotography.blogspot.com/2010/06/7th-annual-sf-crawfish-boil-and-my.html

We ran around picking up some footage for the guys who put this together every year using a Canon 5D Mark II + 24-105mm IS, Canon 7D + 24mm F/1.4, Zoom H4n, & Rode Video Mic. Each of the cameras rocked the Fader ND Filters to get our shutter speeds to a manageable level while allowing us to shoot with Depth of Field. I'm not the greatest video editor, so Waylon cut up a quick one for us with his FCP skills. There will be a full cut for the event owners later.

Fader ND Filters. Gotta Get these!

DSLRUniversity.com just posted a nice review showcasing the Think Tank Airport Security v2.0 rolling camera bag. If you're shopping for a new travel bag that will keep your gear organized, safe, and used for Carry On to an airliner, check out the review. I think I paid $500 for a Tamrac years ago, i'm so glad to see these prices coming down with much better quality too. You can find the prices for the Think Tank Airport Security v2.0 rolling Camera bag by clicking here.

There's no doubt that you'd want to bring some type of camera out to an event. SLR's are great, and I love the fact that you can do both photos and videos all in one unit. For videos though, sometimes you want more movement, something more creative, and that means bringing out a whole bunch of extra gear just to get those stabilized movements. This is where those new Point and Shoot small handheld video cameras really shine. The newer Point and Shoot cameras can do decent photos and very nice 720 HD videos at 30fps which is perfect for the web or even downsizing to DVD.

The problems with the Point and Shoot handheld video cameras are it's size though. Very small cameras are hard to stabilize by hand alone, so for me to get some smoother and more creative shots, I took a trip over to Home Depot and gathered a few parts for a stabilizer. With this new stabilizer I can get pretty smooth fluid shots walking, running, and even get some super super low flying modes where i'm scraping grass! In this video I talk about my basic designs when i'm thinking about stabilizing any type of camera. Keep those basics in mind before building yours, as you'll need to add or remove weights, or even scale the size.

This would work great with the new Sony HX9. Check out the video quality from the Sony DSC-HX9 here: http://cheesycam.com/practice-run-electric-skateboard-hx9/

Hope you enjoy this little DIY stabilizer, leave comments, Tweet, Facebook, Digg, whatever.....

cheesyrig_disorient

Jeff Ello sent this photo in to share his build of the Cheesy DSLR Cage I posted about. It's a Behind the Scenes snapshot of a short flick titled 'Disorient'. Seen in this photo is the recent DIY DSLR Cage / Fig Rig / Stabilizer that was also featured on Cinema5d.com. Jeff made some additional modifications with free swinging handles on the side. I've asked Jeff to send in more photos and information about his project and his rig. The strut channel works perfectly for mounting accessories such as the LCD monitor Jeff has in his image. Very cool! If you haven't checked out the DIY Cage, read my article here: http://cheesycam.com/?p=966

Now i'm not always very clear about my DIY builds, so Marcus V Warner & Brian created their version of the CheesyCam DIY DSLR Cage with alot more detail on the parts list. I'm calling this the LP version because they really get thorough on the build and it's about 20 minutes or so. So if you can't get through understanding my video, check out Vimeo user Vitaphone's below.

They even have a detailed parts list on their Video page at: https://vimeo.com/12362135
