Video I Like

learningdslrvideo

First of all I wanted to thank all the readers that come to this blog, provide feedback, and comment on some of my really Cheesy DIY ideas. So many people have picked up on the things I make, link back to my blog, and even take the time to create videos about their own DIY adventures. It's been an exciting week having been featured on the News section of Cinema5D.com, one of the largest DSLR video forums. Now just yesterday I was Podcasted by Dave Dugdale over at LearningDSLRVideo.com. I'm a pretty boring guy on audio, but Dave grabbed me for some really good questions about the projects I've been sharing with the DSLR community. I even mentioned a little secret information about the next version DIY Skater - 'Spider Trax Dolly' i've been drawing out (get your wheels turning). Check out my Podcast with Dave at LearningDSLRvideo.com, and stick around his website to view more Podcasts and some very informative Video tutorials.

This probably isn't the real music in the above video. It appears someone may have pulled down the video, remixed the music, and then published via Vimeo. So if you're not seeing a Video above, it's probably been taken down.

The point of this post is to point out that this music video was shot with DSLR's, I'm guessing most likely Canon since Nikon isn't up to par with 1080. All that work and no 1080 just doesn't make much sense to me. Anyways, don't listen to the music so much as to view the actual Video footage caught on DSLR's. Kylie Minogue - All the Lovers

DSLR's are such versatile tools. I talked about Timelapse videos and how someone must be skilled to be both a Photographer and Videographer. You have to be able to conceive the end result to setup the shots. Here's another cool little video by FreddieW from YouTube, that mixes both of the skills of understanding Photography and Videography. Don't expect to get this type of footage from even the best point and shoots since there's alot of long exposures and flash syncs. Check out the Behind the scenes first, and then onto the final video project.

YouTube Information from FreddieW:
Enough with the rainbows and flowers - it's time for guns and missles! This is the true power of light painting: every weapon at your fingertips.

Behind the Scenes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TBMWz...

We had a lot of help with this one! Super duper special thanks to:

Jon Salmon, light
David Welch, light/headshotted dude
Alex Reeves, light/goon
Niko Pueringer, weapons artist
Sam Gorski, weapons artist/particles
Jimmy Wong, hero
Heldine Aguiluz, goon
Mike Arnold, goon

It needs to be said - some really precise weapon and grenade animation from Sam and Niko, the MW Short directors. Looks like art school paid off!

Total of about 13 hours of shooting over the course of two days.

VisualRebel picked up on one of my earlier posts found here about cheap ways to shoot Macro. I'm not sure if anyone really believed the quality you can get from flipping a lens backwards, but the proof is in the pudding. This video was shot by VisualRebel using a standard 18-55mm on a 550D / T2i, and handheld used the cheap $99 dollar 50mm F/1.8 in reverse. This awesome little video does a good job in showing the quality of Macro with equipment you probably already have. Now take this setup outdoors with more light, and get in on those creepy crawlies like National Geographic.

Here's a tip folks, if you want to use the exact same setup as VisualRebel, the filter on the 18-55mm is 58mm and the 50mm filter is 52mm. You can buy this special adapter for less than $4.00 dollars + Free shipping to 'mate' the two together (one in reverse) so you don't have to do any handholding. Save yourself the headache. For less than $4.00 + Free shipping, you can get this adapter to hold the lens for you.

I'm not sure what's the best combination of lenses to do this reverse trick, it's more trial and error. Apparently this video shows superb quality and definitely sounds like the cheapest (and lightest) combination for reverse macro. You can find other Rings here to match different size lenses against other size lenses by clicking here.

If you've already got two lenses to do reverse Macro, then the adapter is cheap. If you're looking to simply work with 1 lens, especially the 18-55mm, remember to check out my review on the cheap Macro Bellow found here:

Waylon and his family join a bunch of us in Brentwood, CA for some Cherry Pickin'. I remember going as kids, but haven't been in decades. This past holiday weekend we decided to BBQ and try our hands at some traditional family cherry picking for the kids. We didn't last very long in the heat, but it was fun and definitely an experience for the kids. Waylon traveled light, shooting with a Canon 7D, Monopod, Canon 24mm F/1.4 Prime, Fader ND and I was suprised he could pull off this great video. Thanks Waylon, great job, feel free to drop him some comments too.

I really enjoy Timelapse videos. I think mainly because you have to be both Photographer & Videographer to pull off something awesome. You have to prepare yourself to be in a mindset to not only take good looking pictures, but get the settings right for when you convert those images into a video. One of the hottest Timelapse videos on Vimeo, gaining steam in the last 4 days, is Attica by Alexandros Maragos. Shot with a Canon 7D & 50mm, comments on the Vimeo page state most of the shots were taken at 0.8 seconds exposure & 1 second intervals translated back into a 24fps timeline. Wow that's alot of pictures. All I gotta say is skills....much skills.

Tamron is really throwing their name around with the new lineup of VC lenses. The above video is one of the tutorials found at the Tamron Youtube channel. I actually own the same lens shown in this video (if that's the 18-270mm), and have to admit it's one of my most favorite travel lenses. The VC I can vouch for, works awesome, and works well for video too. You won't get the super sharpness of a prime and the focus ring is a bit noisy and stiff, but Tamron is doing a great job with their pricing too. Check out the Tamron YouTube channel for other great DSLR tips.

I've blogged about this item before at http://cheesycam.com/?p=241. This time around I thought i'd show you what it looks like on video. This is not limited to the 550D, in fact i've owned this special Macro Bellow since the Canon EOS 20D was new. For some reason I'm able to get best results using the 18-55mm kit lens on a cropped camera. It doesn't have Image Stabilization, but this little rail can outperform the $1000 dollar Canon 100mm Macro any day, and it starts for only around $30 bucks. You can find a bunch of these Macro Bellows for sale by clicking here.

When DSLR video's hit the market, the companies weren't ready for it. Although FCP has had some plugins designed and some Compression settings to convert them to an editable format, I think Adobe is setting the bar. Jason Levine shows off some of the new Native DSLR Editing on Adobe CS5. I like it, I think i'm going CS5 just for the editing ability.
