The Video for Z96 DSLR Dimmable LED Video Lights

Wow, just caught a comment about the new Z96 DSLR Video lights being sold on eBay. Right now they are using my video review on their Z96 Video Light auctions! (you can see it on the top right of the image above). Very cool! Normally I worry about my reviews being used on certain items, but for this particular one i'm really honored to be recognized along with. It's such a great product and price which equals huge savings for such an important tool in the DSLR bag. I'm going to order three more to create a 4x4 panel and grab some additional Eneloop batteries.

I really put mine to a test this weekend when shooting for a wedding and I could not be more happy. Though it was daylight, I found myself constantly using the Z96 LED light the entire day to add additional fill inside these dim lit hotel rooms. Now it makes total sense why people are looking to use these LED lights off camera. You might have heard me say I never used the older 126 LED light at full power because it was quite offending and the spotlight effect is very direct. I kept the diffuser on the Z96 which diffuses really well and isn't as offensive and ran it full power most of the day for use as fill light. My Eneloops ran all day all night no problems throughout the whole event. The new Z96 LED is not only powerful, but power efficient. Although the Z96 LED video light can adapt other power sources such as Sony or Panasonic camcorder batteries, I suggest you go with the Eneloop AA's to keep the unit very small and compact instead of a big rock hanging off the back. For external long duration use, the Z96 even has a DC input to plug into the wall, Crazy! (wall adapter not included).

There were photographers on site also who were really impressed with the Z96 LED light, they kept asking me where to buy it and looked pretty stunned when I mentioned the price. I guess they don't read Cheesycam for the cheap deals we find and share. The photographers used as much natural lighting as possible, but when they saw how we were using the Z96 as a fill light to balance exposure from the backlighting, and also used it as a 'catch light' in the eyes of the bride during close ups, the photographers were all over it! We also use the LED lights hovering over the brides jewelry when doing close close macro shots. The extra lighting gives an awesome sparkle to rings and provides a white reflection in the silver. I had absolutely no problems with this light. Feels very very solid, the position on the adjustable neck held strong (which was important as we waved the camera around over a wild dancing crowd). I threw this light into my bags as we moved from location to location without worry of cracking or breaking anything. It's again, really solid.

As demand grows, and as popularity follows on the new Z96 LED video lights, prices are always subject to change. I have no doubt that this will be the most common Video light for any event videographer DSLR or not, and I think it's very cool that they considered using my video review. Awesome.....

  1. Mine was strobing because my son wanted to help me put the batteries in and he put one the wrong way. Luckily that was an easy fix. Scared me for a second though.

On another note, I noticed that I can power my Z96 with my WD external hard drive plug so I can use it in the wall outlet. Kind of nice that I don't have to get another adapter.

@joe - LED lights don't use the same type of dimmers as would be in your home (with tungsten lights). For LEDs it's a type of PWM that pulses very quickly that the human eye does not detect it. When there is not enough proper voltage applied then it will pulse slow enough for the eye to see. For some people, going with the larger Sony batteries worked out better.

    Hi Emm.
Yes i got a box with F&V on it. However I think it may be down to to the battery voltage. I put in AA batteries and its okay for a period but I noticed the light will strobe after a while so I presume this is to do with battery levels?

I didn't expect it to strobe when the voltage dropped. Just wondering is this common.

Thanks for the great website. Very practical, informative and so addictive. Great.

@Joe - Did you get the real one or the copy version? There is one selling as a W96, and is not really the Z96. Did you get a box that said F&V on it?

I received one of these today in the post nut the light fails to stay on and only gives a flashing strobe effect when I use the dimmer. Did anyone have a similar problems or is this just a defective unit?

Do you know where can i buy the z96 dimmable led light in the USA?....I'd search on ebay, amazon, etc, but they distribute them only from China or Hong Kong, and i don't want to pay for taxes.
    Please help!

@pdiddy - not sure, but I think I've had mine The longest, and possibly most used than anyone. Never heard of this before.

  8. my z96 just quit working. I thought I loved it but now i'm concerned that it's cheap and I got what I paid for... It worked as I was using it to check some dental work in my mouth 🙂 Set it on the dining room table and picked it up this morning to put in camera bag. Turned switch on and nothing! Took batteries out (eneloop) charged them. Still didn't work. Tried batteries in other z-96 and they worked. Bummed out to say the least. $70 isn't much but if you have to rebuy it then it's not so good.

Is there a warranty on these??? does anyone know off the top of their head? I bought it in August...

What? Dude, check the box. They each come with a small plastic piece (I almost lost mine) and you use that plastic piece to attach 'upwards'. You can make a 4x4 or more out them stacking both vertical and horizontal.

I received my 4 and I love them, But I was upset that I can only make a train of 4 verticals. I was hoping I could make my own light panel 4 x 4 but you cant.
But I do like them a way lot more than my lite panel mini, Im gonna up it up on ebay and buy me four more for a total of 8!

  12. I agree!

I JUST got mine in the mail today and I have to say it really makes a difference. I did a general test indoors with my f4 Canon 24-105 at 160 iso and what a HUGE difference. I can actually shoot indoors at a reasonable ISO without gain on that lens now. Acts as a GREAT fill for shots too. I may have to order one more before they skyrocket online!

Thanks for the great pointer on such a great deal for what these lights SHOULD be costing us.
