New Gear: Honu GH3 Video Cage by Fhugen

Here's a look at the new Honu Video Cage dedicated for the Panasonic #GH3 camera by Fhugen (pronounced Fusion). It's a 4 piece design that assembles into a very solid, yet lightweight, cage. It's designed to be as compact as possible while still allowing access to all of the main GH3 controls.

If you shoot with the Panasonic #GH3 camera and require mounting various accessories like a large monitor, EVF, audio preamps, mic receivers, etc, this is one product to really look forward to.

The Honu Cage has three dovetails ready to mount up your hot shoe accessories without having to find additional adapters. Several 1/4-20 threaded, 1/4-20 pass through, and 3/8" threaded holes cover the body of the cage. It's finished with matte black anodizing for a long lasting durable finish.

With a $50 dollar off discount, this is THE MOST AFFORDABLE dedicated GH3 video cage on the market right now. Check out more information over at the product page at

What Manfrotto Ball head are you showing in this video Fhugen Honu GH3 cage that holds a Small HD monitor please? Thank you!

hi and thanks for the review of this cage. I was wondering, if you can leave out the right hand sided rail of the cage out and use the Honu as a semi-cage? I'm looking for something that would still let me hold the camera from it's own grip.

@Frank - Well if you wanted to run external power to the camera, you wouldn't need access to the battery door, but that's just extra weight. You should look into the GearBox Cage, your camera will work fine.

  4. @ Emm - Well that's a bummer. Thanks for checking on that for me. I wonder if there is a way to make the battery access area on the cage a separate part so that it can slider underneath the cage to allow little or more space...

@Frank - The T2i camera fits and everything is pretty accessible except for the battery door. It's slightly obstructed.

  6. Does anyone know if the T2i fits properly in the GH3 cage. Dimensions for the T2i are pretty darn close. I wonder if the battery door is accessible.

    GH3: 5.2 x 3.7 x 3.2" / 132.1 x 94.0 x 81.3 mm

    T2i: 5.1 x 3.8 x 3.0" / 130 x 96 x 76 mm

    Can anyone test this?

Yup. Will be my 2nd cage from your recommended. Got the first modular one, love it (but screws seem to lose the grip a tad, still works though).
I ordered a GH3 during the discount (although it still selling for just $50 more so not huge savings) and hope this is a great companion. Hope international shipping is free.
Fun fact my camera is lying in US with a friend and I may not get hands on it till the end of the year.

@boxshooter - It would be tall for it, and i'm not sure about the battery door. I believe the next cage to follow this from Fhugen is for the BlackMagic Pocket Cinema Camera as seen on the website:

@Serge - Yeah actually they should have called it Version 3. I have two version of this Sony watch already so it was a bit confusing. Anyways i'm looking forward to the next watch as well.

Hey Emm, long time follower 1st time poster. I know this is specific to the gh3 but how well would it fit a gh2, clearance issues for the battery door and card slot?

@Serge - It's my Sony Smart Watch, connects to my Android Samsung Galaxy S4. I get instant updates on twitter, facebook, gmail, messaging, etc. You can even add RSS feeds. There's even an app to see live view stream from the phone. Most people glance at their phones every few minutes. Now that i'm wearing this watch, I don't do that anymore. Love this watch so far and it's pretty affordable. Only for android though found here:

  14. Cage what? Oh that thing, for the last 9 minutes I kept looking at your cool watch, I kept trying to guess if its an Ipod or one of those new smart watches. what is it?

@Efex - From what I know so far, there is no handles dedicated for this cage. Considering it is small, I guess you could just put it on top of a rig that has side handles. Or since it has 1/4" holes on the side, there are ways to mount handles to the cage.

@Dario - You can flip it out but you can only tilt so far. I think the images show this.

I spend the morning trying to register for their news letter and have just gotten errors. I hope that doesn't mean I missed the $50 discount code.

@Mustech - They have not released any information yet, but stated it would be sent through their newsletter when it becomes available. They have that information on the product page.

@AdRath - They typically send out the coupon codes to their customer database. If you are not a customer, register for the newsletter. A code will be sent when the product is available, and at this time it's not available. Expected date August 1st is what they have listed.

Nice Looking cage. The price is right with the discount. I didn't see a coupon code anywhere. Is there one? Is the discount still on seeing as the cage isn't available stock?
