Second Panasonic GH3 Camera Body Arrives

The GH3 has been a tough little camera to find at normal retail price. I've been thinking about a second camera body, and when I saw a deal listed under retail price, I just had to jump in on it. I've been really putting the GH3 to work lately, and it will be nice to have a second camera angle that can match up easily in post. These cameras have been backordered and out of stock at retailers, but not impossible to find. The ones that are available are marked up or on auctions via eBay (click here).

Big problem with gh3 is that you can not play back clip through hdmi to monitor like my DP6 and still hear it through the headphone output. ๐Ÿ™

I know ...but many testers in Personal View are reporting that . The All-I full of moire , terrible at pans , etc ...

@labalbi - The All-I footage is easier to work with. As far being the worst quality? I can't say if it's true or not (technically it should be better). From what I understand, the All-I will take each individual frame and compress it by itself so the data you see in each frame is exactly what the camera has seen. It's not reusing the same pixels from previous frames (recycling pixels), which is why it's better.

Maybe. My sistem is core i3 3.2ghz with 12gb RAM. But my GH1 hacked footage with more than 50mbits runs smoothly . I decided not to record using the All-I ยดcos everyone in Personal-view foruns are reporting that this the worse option in GH3 .

And when I convert the .mov from GH3 to Appleprores the movies plays well and , I as told you, the files size are huge ! So , maybe its my system , but I believe it is something related with the codec that .mov 50mbits in GH3 .

@labalbi - Hmm, I don't have any problems playing back the All-I .mov format from the GH3 on my MacBook Pro Retina system using FCPX. I also throw stuff into Premiere CS6 and works great. Maybe your system is slow?

Great tips on GH3 gear ! Thanks ...
But you said you are working with the GH3 . How are you editing ? If I import gh3 movies to my FCPX I get choppy and stuttering videos thanks to h.264 codec. Ok, I can convert to AppleproRes but it increase the already big files in 4x 5x size !!!
What app are you using and what solution to import your videos from GH3 are you using ?
    Thanks a lot

@Hardy - If it's for event coverage, Sennheiser G3 wireless system direct into the GH3. From there you can use LAV mics, or hand held microphones. The GH3 has headphone out to monitor the audio (also has on screen levels) and you can adjust the mic input levels. The Sennheiser G3 stuff also has levels in it's transmitters and receivers.

  8. Hi, Emm, Great post. I have the mark 2 Canon and very interested in the GH3 for your same reasons. Are you saying its very difficult to match up the images between the 2 camera types in post?. I mean is it very noticeable, to let say, someone who wasn't really looking for a difference in the image?

Still eager to get one for lifestyle shoots's with the 2 Panasonic lenses that come recommended to cover 99% of scenarios

@Rob S. - For a majority of things, i'm using the 12-35mm with OIS. Then i'm using Nikon or Rokinon glass mainly because I can set aperture. The Canon EF lenses don't allow this because they are electronic.

Emm, are you using EF lenses on your GH3 with an adapter or are you mostly using Panasonic lenses? This would be a nice b-camera for me if Canon lenses worked as well as MFT lenses.

@Kenneth Lund - I am not sponsored by Panasonic in any way shape or form. I have been working with Video on Canon DSLR cameras for several years, and this camera finally provides many features that i've been longing for in a smaller and more affordable camera format.

You will need to spend $3500 dollars on a Canon 5D Mark III just to get basic headphone monitoring from the DSLR while this GH3 provides this basic feature for under $1300 dollars.
The GH3 can display on it's own monitor while at the same time output HDMI to another screen. Canon does not allow this.
The GH3 has built in Wi-Fi to remote control the camera and send live view feed to your iPhone. Canon does not.
The GH3 is built better than the previous GH2 with a rugged with a Magnesium Alloy, Weather Sealed Body, with a very capable 50Mbps IPB and 72Mbps ALL-I video codec for quality imaging
The GH3 EVF (electronic view finder) allows me to shoot video under bright conditions which I would normally have to carry an extra LCD ViewFinder for the Canon DSLRs.

This will not replace the Canon 5D Mark III for me, but it will be another tool that will work best for my event coverage needs. Smaller, lighter, and cheaper, with excellent quality. The purpose of using these cameras for event coverage of course is double duty to operate as a professional stills camera + video camera. The GH3 still offers amazingly fast auto focus features and very high quality still images that I feel confident about to perform the work I need to do.

  12. Hi!

I'm a new reader of your website and it strikes me that you seem to be writing quite often about this particular camera.

    Being a video-based website I'm wondering why?

Are you just super happy to film with it or is it because of a sponsor-agreement?

Thank you for a great site ๐Ÿ™‚
