Last month Lanparte shipped over to me the HHG-01 3-Axis Gimbal Stabilizer that can be used Smartphones and GoPro Cameras (optional adapter). Here's a video review about the parts, pieces, and at the end video samples of just handheld shooting with the GoPro HERO4.

The Lanparte HHG-01 3-Axis Gimbal worked perfectly to stabilize my handheld shots as I moved the camera around and kept my horizons perfectly level. I had absolutely no issues with drifting and rolling. It's certainly one of the best options available for those who want the option to shoot with both a GoPro or switch off to an iPhone instead of investing in a gimbal that can only be used with one.

    @Ron - If you have thin enough cables, you can use both. The cables have to be very flexible and the connectors have to be small, but it's possible.

    @Gus - Sorry I don't know. They say it's not something that can be re-programmed so I never bothered to check. It's been working great as is, so I never wanted to tweak it.

    Thought you might, on an off chance, know what controller this gimbal uses? Would like to have a crack at a few tweaks... mostly just being able to use it inverted, no idea why they didn't do this out of the box!

    I'm really disappointed. I followed all the links and bought the monitor and arm exactly as shown in the video. But when I go the monitor (yup it is the exact lanparte monitor...it came with a thick cord that just f-s up the stabilizer. It is not the "ribbon" connecter shown in the video. It's a shitty, thick, stiff cable that completely defeats the function of the stabilizer.

    Now what?

    FYI to anyone purchasing the Lanparte 4.3″ LCD on Amazon, the cable that comes with it is too rigid to use with the gimbal.

    I ordered a XProheli Mini to Micro HDMI ribbon cable like the one in the video off of Amazon but it would only show video for a second then go black. I knew it had gotten negative reviews but I haven't been unable to find the same kind of cable from anywhere else, so I decided to try anyway. No luck. If anyone has another source for one that works then please post a link!

    I found the Lanparte 4.3" LCD on Amazon but had a question on what powers it. Do you have to use a Canon battery to power it? From the description it sounds like it requires an external battery.

    @Matt - There are people who can get really good results with gimbals, and then there are some who aren't getting it quite right. I'm not exactly sure what your PID settings are on the Varavon, but I would have to say maybe they just aren't setup well? What firmware are you running right now? The Birdycam2 works great when setup correctly, so there should still be some hope with that system.

    The problem with the HERO4 is that it's not super great in low light. You'll get a wide FOV, but the image won't be as sharp and detailed, and will have more noise when working indoors or late in the day. You can't control the shutter speed for the motion blur that makes some video look more 'film like'. I'm not saying it's not worth it. I love grabbing a GoPro on a gimbal and shooting, but it's not the same as a GH4.

    Can you tell me what firmware you have and grab a screenshot of your PID settings and motor settings?

    Hi Emm, I've had a few flycam style stabilizers, the first brand was a pain, then I got I got an easier to balance tooless one that I added a quick release plate to. That was a help, but I don't like "steering" it, as in how it doesn't pan with my hand movement. The trick of gently pinching and rotating the handle with my other hand is not ideal for me.

    So then I got the Nebula 4000 gimbal, and after balancing it and messing with the PID settings and adding tripod feet and dual handle rigs and an arm to hold a tablet for wifi control of my GH4, I got rid of it. I was excited to get it and inspired by some cool example clips, but ultimately disappointed in real world performance, even though I was able to get the balance just about perfect in the studio. I was pushing the weight limit and couldn't use my metabones adapter with Tokina 11-14 lens. I was able to get a few moments of awesome stability each time I filmed with it, but it would drift on me or start jerking around like crazy at random times which ruined the take and caused me to have to ditch using it on an important shoot.

    So now I have the Varvaon Birdycam 2 gimbal, and I love the construction, adjustments, and joystick, but I'm dealing with the same headache in terms of getting it dialed in at the studio and then going on a shoot and having it act up on me. Perhaps I could tweak the PID settings more, but it's not fun and besides that, I feel like my my low-fi flycam is much more predictable. So now I'm frustrated and considering going with the Lanparte and a GoPro with monitor like you have in this post. I'm thinking if I shoot with a wide lens 11mm with metabones on a GH4, the GoPro Hero 4 black will be a comparable field of view...though the lack of focal length on GoPro bugs me...sometimes I just don't want such distortion, but the fact that the Lanparte is balanced for the GoPro seems like a more ready to go solution for me and also more reliable on set.

    Sorry for the long post, I just wanted to explain where I'm coming from and ask your opinion about getting rid of the Birdycam that I use with my GH4 and spending the money on the Lanparte, monitor, plus, GoPro Here4 setup instead as a more reliable, more fun, and less hassle solution.

    @Emm - Why do you think that? Is it a balance thing, a fit thing, …? When you attached the GoPro mount in the video, it looked like there was room for the lens to fit through the gap at the side, if the camera was reversed.

    @Kevin - I want to say LanParte is the maker and Ikan may rebrand it, but yes I think the Lanparte monitor and clamp will work on there too.

    Looking at the GoPro adapter, it seems like it would be possible to mount the GoPro the other way around, so the lens is facing in the same direction as a phone lens. This could make it possible to use it with the LCD Bacpac attachment.

    Could somebody with this gimbal, a GoPro and BacPac confirm if this is the case or not?

    I've only been using this guy for the last could of days and love it... to answer some of the above questions it does work just fine with the iphone6+ and works fine with a gopro hero4 black and a filter on the front of the gopro.

    I have had my Lanparte gimbal for weeks now.

    I used it on a shoot last week and started to notice that it rolls to the right with my iPhone 6 for 2-3 degrees then it eventually evens itself out after several minutes. (Powering down then back up will make it go off level again)

    Have you heard of this problem?

    @drawer77 - The Nebula can be used with a variety of lenses and camera bodies which means you have to balance and 'tune software' accordingly. These little stabilizers are dedicated to just a few setups you can't use it for anything else, so they are already tuned.

    I'm guessing that it would be cool to insert a dummy box exactly the size of a GoPro onto the Z1-Rider, but to snap a cell phone holder on the front of it.

    Then again, would that not work because the center of gravity would now be so far in front of where it is supposed to be? Just figured I'd ask before tinkering and potentially screwing up my Z1-Rider. The detachable mount is so valuable on the Z1-Rider...and yet it would be so great to get it to work with a cell phone.     @Food Biker - The physical dimensions of the small 'GoPro Only' gimbals won't have the proper spacing of the motors to support a smartphone. If you want to fly Smartphones (iphone), then you'd have to look at a different gimbal. Lanparte did a good job by first making this one a bit larger for phones, and then just adding an adapter for smaller gopros.

    Hi Emm, could you please post some non-slomo footage? It's always difficult to see the real-world stabilization when it's recorded in slow motion. I'd rather see an example that shows the quirks and problems ...

    Emm - I'm really enjoying the Z1-Rider, particularly as we're shooting motorcycle and auto footage stuff for our show, and we need the flexibility. We also quickly built the detachable handle, which works like a charm and we can't wait to do the Russian Arm thing.

    The only thing is that I'd love to somehow convert it to swap in any given smart phone (we use the iPhone 5s and will be upgrading to the 6s when it comes out). That would be the holy grail.

    Do you think that Z1-Rider or some of these gimbals would work with some sort of homemade adapter? Not sure if they're calibrated for the weight/position of the GoPro, and we don't want to damage the unit we have here. Thanks!

    @seenematic I recently went to my local camera shop that has the Feiyu G4 and they told me the screws that come in the box does not fit with the backpack on the hero 4. Their shipment was about 2 weeks old. Something to consider.

    Thanks, I've seen that one before, but always prefer to buy one that has been tested by someone reliable like you 😉

    @Jason - Just like with your DSLR, by reducing shutter speed you can introduce more motion blur into the shot which tends to looks better. NDs can also help to retain some information in highlights like in the sky sometimes. Here's a link.

    @Naj - The monitor used is a 5" Lanparte monitor that was sent to me. Right now there is no link to this monitor. It might be too new. Hang tight until I hear back from them about it.

    @Jack D. - No need to try, it literally will not work. The physical dimensions of this gimbal is too small.

    @Habez - Sorry this one is only for GoPro and Smartphones, not for the RX100. You'll still be looking at the ones you've mentioned.

    For a while now i've been trying to find a one handed gimbal that can fly my rx100mk3. Not sure if this one can possibly hold it as they dont really state any kind of weight/payload maximum.

    Thoughts or suggestions for other products would be great (:

    PS- I know the nebula/came-single/pilot-fly can definitely carry an rx100mk3 but i was just wondering if there was something even smaller and lighter like this that exists xD thanks!

    @jc - I will try to find out. I don't know anyone with a 6+ or large Note. Lanparte may have the answers though.

    @james T - Yes the output of HDMI will drop as it can't process the full res output. The old Canon DSLR cameras would do this too. It's just the nature of the GoPro.

    when i connect my hero 4 through a monitor, as soon as i click record, the monitor goes to 480p, does that happen to you?

    @Steve B - They sent me the cable with the LCD Monitor. I was trying to find a longer one to use with a gimbal, but can't seem to locate one. Might need a basic cable and then an adapter of sorts.

    @Joseph - I'm still waiting to hear back about that. They showed it at NAB and sent me one, but I'm waiting for the product links. It's a new thing they have, but damn I really can't go back to the GoPro app after using this lightweight monitor.

    @Jc - The Z1 Rider is ONLY for GoPro and does not have a handle for just general use. You can make a handle as I did, but it's still only for GoPro. If that's all you need the Z1 Rider is great and it allows you to mount the gimbal in ways you would normally mount your GoPro. The LanParte on the other hand works for both GoPro and Smartphones, and comes with a handle for general use. Either way you go, you will get smooth footage from your Gopro.
