And there you have it. Another Canon DSLR Camera release. The new Canon EOS Rebel T4i comes with everything we've already come to expect from a typical Canon Rebel camera including swivel LCD screen (it's now Touch Screen LCD with Swipe, Pinch, and Zoom support), but the stand out feature is the continuous Auto Focus in Video mode. That's a first for any Canon DSLR.

Although it can provide continuous Auto Focus to standard EF and EF-S lenses, the best performance happens when used with an STM Lens. With the Touch Screen you can actually drag your focus point around and the T4i will follow. Canon has available the 18-135mm STM Lens with the kit, or the Canon 40mm F/2.8 STM Lens is also available (found here).

Post author@Mike - Correct. If you don't mind using the extra little adapter it will work fine.
Mike
@Emm I was thinking I could always use an 3.5mm to XLR with the VMP which would eliminate need for mini jack input!? Then the RA333 would work for me.
Mike
Emm,
I considered the ra333 but it doesn't have a mini jack input which I need when using a Rode Video Mic Pro. The dt454 not only has 2 xlr inputs, but it also has a mini jack input. I have my juicedlink ds214 on EBay which I have been using for monitoring. It only has a single mini jack input with no xlr. Also, ds214 is a pain to mount and the knobs are goofy because of the way the board is mounted in the chassis. I have a Rode VMP and Sennheiser wireless for capturing audio. Anyway, if u can think of a better solution, I'm definitely all ears.

Post author@Mike - If you don't already have a JL, there's also a new RA333 that would provide headphone monitoring. Check it out here: httpss://cheesycam.com/juicedlink-rm333-and-ra333-audio-preamps/

My T4i came today. I upgraded from the T3i and I'm impressed. The continuous auto-focus is amazing. It's still pretty loud with my Tamron 10-24. Hoping to get the new Canon 40mm ATM lens which is made specifically for the camera. Also impressed with the touch screen. My review is based only on a few hours of testing. Only thing missing is audio monitoring :/ But for under $800 online, it's well worth the price. I'll be pairing it with a Juicedlink DT454 for monitoring.
leo
all the lense are going to work in autofocus VIDEO or only de new 40 mm, 18-135mm?
Evan
The Panasonic GH2 has had these feature for two years. Canon is behind times when it comes to video.

@ Matthew
as long as there are no fingerprints on the image....just wipe your screen clean...
More troublesome would be the camera moving as soon as you touch the screen..
Matthew
Do people really like having a screen covered in greasy fingerprints? Maybe on your phone. Not on my camera!

I saw some sample footage on this and I might be sold on this if I can get more lowlight samples soon.
The autofocus is AMAZING! When you see face recognition on 1 subject (if there are 2 subjects) , you could pick the next subject by touching the touching the screen and when the Face Recognition is selected on that particular subject then it follows that subject and keeps the focus on him/her even if he/she moves forward or backwards.

You have to have such a firm grip on the camera to use the touchscreen...look at the video.
Your fingers are right there to use the actual quicker buttons. I don't understand the point of it.
Not to super impressed...If I still had my t2i I woulda upgraded but it looks like a super step down from 60d. I am interested in the digic 5 processors.
Someone review the 40mm lens! That is what I want.
Greg
I'm curious to see how long the battery life will be with all these features like the touch screen, cont. focus, and the touch shutter speed control...It sounds great, but will it be practical.
Olphus
How about 1080p or at least 720p HDMI out for sharp monitoring?
Moire issues?
The 650D might just be interesting.
Chris
Up to 8gb recording or 22 minutes now ... that's increased, sweet.
Me
I just ordered a 5D Mark III. I'm not upset about it at all but I do think the 5D Mark III should include all these features that Canons lower models have...
Tom
@David
The 40mm pancake is many times sharper at f/2.8 vs the 50mm.
IMO.. its a wonderful lens.
Emm
Post author@terry - They claim it is smooth and it is silent with STM lenses. The touch screen let's you move that focus point around too so it's like having an electronic follow focus. Sounds interesting, but i'm waiting to see how it really works.
terry
I am very interested in the t4i but I'm wondering if the autofocus is smooth. If not I'll pass.
Tony
I preordered. Need a 2nd Canon dSLR... just hoping the low light performance is only 1 stop behind the 5DIII.
Dave Navarro
I need to sell my T2i and get this.
david
looking in the specs im only missing
- headphone jack
- long movie recording > 4 GB (splitting files)
david
ok the autofocus can be a dealbreaker so this lense makes only sense on cam with continous autofokus
david
the pancake makes no sense to me for arround 90€ you get the 50mm 1.8
if you carry a big body with you. you shouldnt have a problem carring a lense to
