Oddly, I looked at this item yesterday and it was out of stock. I guess they just re-listed the inventory this morning so it gives you another chance to grab a few. [Thanks Cameron] Best deal online that I could find currently, and with all these point and shoot cameras and GoPros that i've accumulated, I needed to stock up. Other sizes are also on discount from 4GB, 8GB, and 32GB, but not priced as nicely as the 16GB right now. You can find the Transcend 16GB Class 10 SDHC on sale following the link to Amazon (click here).

Sometimes a single light is all that's needed. Here's an inexpensive Octagon softbox with a 105w CFL bulb (equivalent to approx. 525w incandescent). The kit also comes with an 86" air cushioned light stand, and available for Prime shipping, making the deal even sweeter. This is a nice little setup because CFL bulbs transmit most of their light from the sides and not the front of the bulb. A softbox used with CFL bulbs will trap and redirect more light than those shoot through umbrella type kits like these (here).

The stock bulb is spec'd at 6500K which is fairly cool, but there are plenty of 105w 5500k CFL Light Bulbs available online. If this is your only source of light, a simple white balance should warm things up. Right now there's a price drop on this single CFL light Stand Softbox kit, and less than 5 available following the link (click here).

For a very basic general lens, the Canon EF-S 55-250mm with Image Stabilization is on sale for about one hour from now (or until 100% claimed). I searched around a bit over on eBay, and the new low discounted price is even cheaper than a trying to find a used version. Find it at Amazon's deals while they last (click here).

Big ups to CineGrain for sending out some fun and creative software. I'm trying to find time to install this massive collection of stuff that comes in it's own hard drive. I think this thing is over 100GB of film grain goodness, and this isn't their most extensive package.

Interesting post over at Petapixel, about how the Luma Loop strap was killed off. I've heard some rumors about possible bully tactics. Even if there are no patent violations, small companies can't defend themselves when threatened with a lawsuit and are left to dissolve because of the possibility of high lawyer fees. Another rumored tactic stated that even if 'Company A' has been cleared of any patent violation, letters are sent to major distributors warning them that 'Company A' could possibly (keyword possibly) be violating patents, which cause distributors to stay clear from purchasing other similar products. These letters are sent even while knowing there is absolutely no patent violation. There's definitely some dirty tricks out there, and i'm wondering if any of you have heard the same? There's more information and a letter from Luma Loop following the link: https://www.petapixel.com/2011/11/15/luma-loop-camera-strap-killed-off-after-patent-awarded-to-black-rapid/

For those who have been eyeballing the Fuji X10. Last time I posted about the X10 in stock, it sold out in the first hour. You still won't find one available at standard MSRP with Amazon and over on eBay they'll have auctions running as high as $1300 dollars (here). Best bet is the ones in stock right now at B&H before it's gone. (Click Here).

[Update: Sold out again in a few hours]

(BTW: The video (below) was shot on the Fuji X10. Notice all the aliasing? I think the Sony HX9V shoots better video, but the X10 does way better Photos)

Even though small cameras don't share the same video quality as the DSLRs, I still love to shoot with them. Especially for little reviews like this on the blog, i'm not overly concerned with quality. Heck most of my videos are uploaded in 480 SD. When shooting videos with small cameras, I like using grips. I wasn't too happy with the current small handle grips on the market, so it was about time to make something new.

(left to right - Barska, Opteka, PNC Grip)

The Barska is a great handle, but you'll need to grind down the threads a bit. The narrow platform overflows a small and wide camera base, but is suffice for light gear. The Opteka is mostly plastic and has a mini-quick release. This is not suitable at all for anything more than say a FlipHD. I wanted a handle that would fit my needs when it came to the cameras I was working with. I felt that most people who shoot with small cameras like me could benefit with an updated handle design.

These new handle grips from PhotographyandCinema.com have a wide base compared to the narrow ones available today. The new PNC Grip is much larger than the Barska, and has the rubberized coating which has a professional feel to it. The wide platform carries the weight better and ensures less twisting with a heavier load. Great for all the new small cameras like Canon S100, Panasonic GX1, Fuji X10, Sony NEX-5n, etc. A simple idea that makes a lot sense with the current trend in pocket video cameras (at least for me). It's on the last leg of completion and should be available soon. Target retail price?? Trying to get it around $20 bucks.
