What is your typical Multi-camera Setup when recording a performance, recital, concert, etc? Well here's a quick look at my most basic gear for three static camera angles. I typically go with (3) Panasonic GH4 cameras as I love the super long battery life, and 4K video recording all day (deliver 1080 but flexible in post for faux zooms and crops).

If i'm doing a 3 camera angle shoot, I find it's easier to match footage when you have the exact same cameras (same color profile, set same exposure, etc).

I also make sure to add a good microphone to each camera as you need really good scratch audio to do a quick sync in post. As a backup I also run timecode on all cameras and match them as close possible for post sync. In the photo you'll see i'll use either a Rode VideoMic Pro or Azden SMX-30.

I also try to use Sandisk 128GB SDXC Cards so I don't have to swap cards during the event, and record each video clip as long as possible. I find it's easier to sync a few long clips in post than a hundred small clips. Once the clips are synced in post, it's easy to cut out all the dead time.

For audio, I make sure to bring a few portable audio recorders (like Zoom H1) and set them up close to Audio Speakers, but i'll bring a Multitrack recorder (like Zoom H6) to plug directly into the sound board. The Zoom H6 offers dual recording in case sound peaks, and worst case scenario I can sometimes grab audio from the cameras (since they are mic'd up).

I also break out my hands free wireless headsets for each camera operator to make sure everyone is on the same page. Good communication is key between multiple operators.

Finally and totally optional, i've rigged up a dual monitor setup with Camera Motion Research Connex Wireless Video Kits. Super reliable and long range systems. So while i'm operating the main camera, I can get a feed from the two other camera angles and make sure I have a clear visual what everyone is covering. With our wireless headsets, I can direct the other two operators to make sure we cover the entire performance.

Here's a product overview of the new CAME-TV CAME-ARGO Gimbal stabilizer which will fly camera setups up to 6 lbs. If you're currently using a CAME-TV 7500/7800 gimbal, the ARGO would support a similar size/weight setup. The difference is this new SBGC powered gimbal also incorporates physical Encoder hardware that makes SBGC gimbals several times more stable and battery efficient.

CAME-TV has been manufacturing and selling more a wide variety of gimbals over several years, and this experience has allowed them to make each new system better over the last. As seen in the video demonstration above, right out of the box the CAME-TV ARGO Gimbal is incredibly stable and moves very the camera very smoothly (video samples coming soon). Build quality feels very solid, but only time can tell how much abuse it will handle during these next few months of use.

Right now the company offers gimbals in various sizes. The CAME-ACTION for GoPro, CAME-SINGLE and CAME-Mini2 for Mirrorless cameras, the 7800 for DSLR sized bodies, and the 8000 for heavier Blackmagic and RED cameras.

As of now only the CAME-ACTION, CAME-SINGLE, and CAME-ARGO have Encoder Hardware (and soon to be released hand held gimbal for Smartphones with Encoders). At some point this year we will see a Mini3, and a larger model to replace the 8000.

While the case is suffice to prevent scratches and should transport the ARGO safely, the foam will probably deteriorate quickly. Because of the similarity in size and shape, if you're looking for a custom cut foam case that would work with the CAME-TV ARGO, the DJI Ronin-M OEM Case will hold all of the ARGO items (and more) perfectly.

The Connex Accessory Pack by Camera Motion Research is a custom kit designed to make using your Amimon Connex simple to use for video use. Normally over $300 for this kit, they are currently offering a 25% discount on this accessory pack (found here).

The kit includes a Battery Cage and Antenna Support for the Air Unit (TX), a Battery Cage for the Ground Unit (RX), Power Cables, Shoe Mount adapter with thumbscrews, thin 19 inch Flexible HDMI (A) to mini HDMI (C), two 12V rechargeable Lithium batteries, two AC battery chargers, and spare mounting screws. This kit is an add-on that modifies the Connex so that the TX and RX can be powered with their own portable battery along with simple mounting options to use with camera and remote monitor.

The Connex is an extremely reliable full 1080 HD Video transmitter that can achieve 1080p up to 60fps over 1000 Meters away. The omni-directional broadcast means that it is not as sensitive to direct line of sight as other kits, and we've even used the system through obstacles (several walls) without a hiccup. If you're not familiar with this system, I have a product overview of the Connex (here).

In the video below you'll see an example of @SatoStudios using the Connex with CMR Accessory Pack during a music video shoot streaming to an OSEE Monitor. The shot required the gimbal operator (Scotty) to walk backwards up a curved flight of stairs, continue down a long hallway, into a bedroom. With the Connex attached to a DJI Ronin-M gimbal, the operator was free to focus on walking (making sure he doesn't trip up or fall) while Mike Sato remotely controlled Pan and Tilt camera movements using an optional DJI Ronin-M Wireless Thumb Controller from a distance.

Here's a video interview at the Aputure booth during the NAB 2014 show introducing the NEW 60GHZ Aputure Array Trans Wireless Video System. The product release was delayed and only recently has it become available.

Fast forward almost 10 months from the interview, the Array Trans kit is now available (found here) but we've learned a few things about what this kit is able to do and what it can't do. Transmitting over 60GHZ with 16 antennas in both the TX and RX, the unit is fast and clean, BUT it requires a direct line of sight without any obstacles (does not transmit 360 degrees Omnidirectional). The range is also limited to under 80 meters.

So it appears that the Array Trans is going to be targeted for specialized setups in which the camera remains static. Such examples they share is a camera mounted behind a basketball hoop sending a feed back to a live switcher, or in a concert setting where the multi-camera setups remain static. Of course if you have to pan and tilt your camera, just make sure you have the TX mounted off the camera (i.e. on a stand) so that you don't change it's direction. So long as the TX and RX have a direct line of sight without any obstruction, the uncompressed 10 bit 4:2:2 feed should be extremely fast and good enough to record or broadcast from.

The Array Trans does transmit both video and audio if you have to record sound. And while there are some limitations, the price is more affordable than similar systems that can transmit at this quality and range. Available now on both eBay and Amazon (links below).

Well, I knew the Asus WiCast wasn't very demanding in Voltage or Amperage. Grabbed a couple of electronic battery boxes that hold 4 AA batteries to add up to around 6volts, cut the wire off the power adapter, and i'm in business. I had a feeling it didn't need to be a perfect 5Volts and the 4 AA's that up to 6V probably can't sustain that voltage anyhow. How long is the run-time? Not sure yet, just testing things out, but very happy that i'm on my way to some DIY HD Streaming video action.
