28Oct Swivi – External 5.6″ Swivel LCD
Swivi (Swi-vee), the external 5.6″ swivel LCD monitor has been showing at PDN New York for the past few days (still showing) and a few blogs have already published about it. I have not seen the final version of this product, but I hear the build quality was beefed up and other software features were added. The few that were brought to the show for early birds were sold out in a few hours at a $300 dollar price tag (don’t quote me on that price). Hopefully we’ll have more information when it’s officially released for sale online. No news if i’ll get to see the final version anytime soon. Product page at http://www.swiviusa.com.

Holy jesus I think my prayers have been answered. Although I was just about to put my 7D kit on ebay to downgrade to a 60D… don’t know if I want to now.

Do you know which booth they’re showing this at PDN Photoplus? I couldn’t find them on the map on the Photoplus website. Thanks!

You know, thinking more about this, who says you have to mount it under the camera?

Emm,
Did I read your previous correct that the focus peaking only worked when zoomed int?

@Dietrich – Focus peaking and zoom features are different. Also, those software features could have changed in the final version.

They were not sold out. I went there after reading this and bought one. It pretty awesome. The peaking works , it doesn’t have to be zoomed in. The monitor is great and it comes with the sunshade.

GOLDEN QUESTION:
On the 5D, 60D and 550D, this downsamples to 480p once recording has begun, yes?
October 28th, 2011 at 10:56 pm
@KahL – Technically it’s the camera that gets downsampled, but the monitor remains at the same resolution. This monitor I believe is native 800×600? (don’t quote me on that).

On my 7d no down sample to 480. LCD is 800×600.
You can find them at the Kamerar USA/ Carryspeed booth

Damn, I guess that’s a yes then
Essentially this would only be useful for the 7D right now. It’s meant to be handheld by it’s great design, but if using an external recorder, you would need a rig setup, negating this design.
I think this will be much more useful with the likes of the 1Dx and or next DIGICV DSLR that won’t downsample when recording via HDMI.

This is kind of interesting, but I’m not sure I’m sold on why I would want this instead of a small external monitor.

Does this block the audio ports?

Has anyone asked or thought about the weight with the battery of this thing? I think this is a great accessory super intelligent design simply due to the fact that HDMI cables pop out if the cord is being stretch. Having this cable coiled up between the units really means no worries. However we should know how side heavy this thing is. If your using the camera is it pulling to the left all the time, whats it like to hold, how ergonomic-al is this? Any thoughts dudes?
