04Jul Sony DSC-HX9 Fun Bits
The Sony HX9 point and shoot camera might seem quite silly, but if it is a tool to inspire creativity to go out and shoot, i’m all for it. The GoPro HD camera does the same thing and I feel it’s earned it’s place in a video maker’s tool kit. Let’s see how the HX9 holds up. Here’s a few tid bits people are working on with their Sony DSC-HX9 camera.
First up, Ryan Czaplinski throws a quick and dirty test to see how far off (or how close) the video footage looks between a Canon 5D Mark II and Sony HX9 in case you need to mix the two on edit.
Second video, Tony Carretti adds more stabilization with a handle and L bracket for additional mounts. Yes, I would seriously throw a microphone / recorder onto this thing for people who do event coverage interviews or blogs. You’ve got good wide, 16x optical zoom, and excellent Macro (close-ups). Make life simple.
Third video. I take my HX9 out for a spin on that Electric Skateboard Olivia can ride so well. I’m still learning my balance, don’t judge my riding skills. I take the HX9 and throw it onto my Velbon UltraStick Monopod. Next, i’ll throw it onto my DIY point and shoot stabilizer to see if that improves some of that twitching and jerking.
Now this little camera does full 1080 @60p, so it’s just a matter of time before we see this being used on some Suction Cup car mounts for interesting slow motion POV shots…

Emm, did you take a look at the DSC-TX100v before deciding on the hx9v?
The TX100v supposedly has the same sensor, and shoots 1080 60p as well. It doesn’t have nearly the same zoom range, but is far more compact, and has an awesome 3.5″ OLED display. It has a Carl Zeiss lens which some forums said was sharper than the G lens on the HX9.
I am going to get one of these for some glidecam style shots at my weddings (vs lugging tons more equipment), but I would also like to use it as an all around point and shoot camera on vacations, etc.
I was just wondering if you knew something else that made you go for the HX9, or if I should opt for the smaller (just as good??) TX100v?

@videoguy916 – The HX9 is not touch screen, and the buttons make getting to the menu easier. It’s also easier to hand hold if you don’t have the stabilizer and kicks butt with the image stabilized 16x optical zoom.

Would you consider it small enough to comfortably carry around in my pocket?
July 5th, 2011 at 2:28 pm
Does it have live HDMI output?

Having 1080p at 60fps in such a small package is really amazing, if kind of makes you wonder how come cameras like the Canon 5DMK2 and 7D, 60D, T3i, T2i don’t have them. I understand the the sensor output is much larger but I’m sure canon could have easily done it. I think it might be fun to possibly attach this camera on top of a Canon DSLR using the hot shoe or mount it to a camera rig along with your DSLR. This way while you shoot your regular footage if you want to slow some of it down you use the Sony footage. Even though depth of field my be a factor the cameras look like they can be integrated together beautifully. maybe shooting at high apertures will help the camera footage go together beautifully. I know it’s a silly idea but I think it could work. Imagine shooting sports where you have your 5D zoomed in all the way the Sony wide and you integrate slow motion with regular motion. Just a thought and I’m know sometimes for having ideas that are way out there ha.

Mounting something like this to the hot shoe is an awesome idea!

@Chris,
No, it doesn’t have live HDMI out.
@Videoguy916,
It’s pretty compact, and will certainly fit in a large pocket like cargo shorts side pockets, but it’s still a subtancial size compared to some of the ultra compacts.

With the LCDVF it actually looks like it’s just an EVF, which is funny. That setup is really cool for super run-and-gun shooting, though.

Does it do focus for DOF shots?
Thanks!

@Constantin Gabor – There is manual focus in some modes, but video is all automatic.

I have used this technique for a client:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsmCsI7vijE
but i used a Casio Exilim HighSpeed camera to get 240fps in Multicam. You can see the effect at 1:09 in the video.
Cleaning up that resolution is quite hard but if you don’t watch it at 1080p it’s fine.

That would be a great camera to put in a housing for shooting underwater…
July 6th, 2011 at 6:18 pm
@Rod Parmenter – Yes it would, but no housings are available (yet).

Does it allow you to lock the exposure and change the colour settings of things like contrast, saturation, sharpness etc?
July 6th, 2011 at 8:03 pm
@Glenn – It does not allow you to lock exposure, but you can change contrast, saturation, etc.

I just love this little cam! I got good results holding a cokin ND8 filter pressed against the lens when shooting outside in bright sunshine. It helps slowing down the shutterspeed and avoids the strobe look. Any ideas on how to diy a filter mount, Emm?
July 6th, 2011 at 11:16 pm
@Jon – LOL, I was already looking into that same thing too. Cokin makes a Point and Shoot filter holder, which i’m planning on getting.

Hi Emm, thanks for the reply. In that case I’ll be sticking with my S95.

BTW for some fun, drop the hx9 video into an after effects 5.5 project and use warp stabilizer. No glidecam needed! Buttery smooth!

While zooming i get a jerky movement from e lens. Anybody else seen this? Is it normal from this cam or should i check it out?
Thanks.

I feel an obligation to post this. I’ve owned this camera for about 4 months. I have had to return it to the shop twice to have the flash fixed. Because of the location of the flash and because it pops up – it is easy to break when you have your finger over the flash. It should have been designed to fail elegantly when it feels pressure, instead it just breaks.
