29Sep Rokinon Updates 8mm Fisheye HD Optics Removable Hood

Rokinon has updated their popular 8mm Fisheye lens to include better optics and now a removable lens hood. I recall some people needed to shave down the old version depending on the camera they were trying to fit it with. This will give you 180 degree viewing angle on APS-C sensor sized cameras. Although it can be mounted on Full Frame cameras like the 5D the image will not fill the entire frame. You can already find the Rokinon 8mm F/3.5 Fisheye lens available via B&H (click here) and also via eBay (Click Here)

If you have the old version and need go get it shaved so you can use it on full frame, this is the guy that shaved mine, and I think he did a pretty awesome job, I’d totally recommend it:

They are great for the money, but I HIGHLY doubt this lens is any sharper. Anyone want to confirm?

@Ben – The term better optics may also be a reference to different coatings to prevent lens flare or ghosting, who really knows. It may not necessarily mean sharper images. One thing I noticed is that the old version was advertised to have a 180 degree field of view, while the new version only has a 167 degree field of view (narrower). This very well could make an image slightly sharper towards the edges. It would be an interesting test.

Got this and its really nice with the 5DmkII. Great build, solid and really fishy! No shaving needed!

Good for you, Mark. That lens is like 3 times the price and completely different. Get outta here with that.

Thanks Ben. Just sharing what I know no harm in that. It took me alot of research to find something with in the 10-17 fish eye lens that is fair in price compared to the canon fisheye for a full frame. It may save time for people who are intersted with this type of lens.

Have a look on Photozone and DxOMark at how the Samyang/Rokinons outperform all Canon zooms and even the pretentious, overpriced Zeiss lenses (yes…the ones with built-in vignetting).
The Samyang 35mm F1.4 AS UMC Nikon is the second highest rating lens currently tested.
If the Koreans can do it for a fraction of the price…WTF is wrong with the design people at Zeiss and Canon?
