28Mar Pico Dolly Motorized Mod with Laser Alignment
Thanks to YouTube member dim3m for sending in this fine example of a modified Pico Flex Dolly. [Thanks dim3m] The rear trailer contains the servo, servo controller, batteries, etc. The laser alignment shows you the cross point reference for the center of rotation. Having motorized control gives you more consistent movement across the entire rotation. Aside from fancy rotating shots, the Pico Flex can mimic side to side slider shots, or push / pull dolly shots. Especially useful for B-Roll, cut away, or pick up shots with small product reviews. For more information on the Pico Flex Skater Table Dolly check out PhotographyandCinema.com.

Dim3m…build me one! lol. Awesome job. When’s the step-by-step diy build coming? Wait, I don’t have the time… revert to the former. =)

I agree with Tony, I’d pay for something like that. I love my Pico, and laser sights alone would be amazing to have.

Very cool. Where do all these sharp young guys come from?
I know I am just an old f*rt, but to have the skill to set up a laser tracking system is pretty keen …

Hi Emm,
Thanks for this post. I don’t have the skills to motorise my pico dolly but I’d like to know how to find a centre sweet spot with the lasers. Can you tell me how to do this?
Thanks
Carl

And this is the SIMPLIFIED version?!?!
(O__o)
Yeah I’d rather pay for a built than to D.I.Y. it.

@carl – You can find really cheap pen lasers just about anywhere these days. You want to align it with the axles. Where the path crosses is where the center of rotation will be.

@carl – Specifically, the type of laser you will need are Line lasers. Ebay sells a lot of it, some at .99c

@dim3m do you have a parts list and DIY tutorial on how to wire this sucker up?

@DigitalCyclops you can head over to my blog to see the parts and detail pictures of the build. dim3m.com

How would you use the lasers to help with straight alignment? Would you set it so that each pair of lasers make a perfect line with no overlap?
