16Sep Olivia testing Steadicam Glidecam
A Steadicam Rig I built for my last project, she carries it with ease. I think the rig weighs more than she does. Canon 5D Mark II + Sigma 20mm F/1.8, Glidecam HD4000 with Steadicam Merlin Vest (hybrid). Varavon Armor Cage, Rode VideoMic Pro, 312 LED Video light, SmallHD DP4 (below) powered by two 12V/5V battery packs.

She ain’t to bad either? Dude, that is some serious high heat. And, operating a STEADICAM in some type of heeled shoe/boot now that’s just pure talent!!!

Does the arm and vest stabilize the rig even further, and make it easier to control (as opposed to hand holding the Glidecam)?

Yeah, ditto for the footage Olivia shot

Dunno, seems like she is struggling to keep her balance. Then again, I really can’t understand how women can balance themselves correctly in high heels :p

Bit difficult to know how good it is without seeing the footage shot. Anyway, herself is too distracting!

@Fit Kikenny – She’s just testing the weight, we weren’t recording anything. No matter how well balanced a Steadicam is, it still takes lots of practice from an operator. There’s plenty of footage from this rig on my blog that i’ve done. Works very smooth.

@mike_tee_vee – You steer the rig with one hand and carry the weight on the other. The vest really helps carry the weight so you can concentrate of steering. Especially if you have to run.

How fast can you run and still get a steady video?
September 17th, 2011 at 9:11 am
@Musouka – Not sure exactly how fast. I’m not a runner even without the vest. Old knees bad back..lol.

Haha, it seems that I will have to join the gym just to be fit enough!

Olivia tested, Emm approved!
September 17th, 2011 at 8:04 pm
…time to hang up my DIY dual arm and get a bona fide merlin/pilot arm…
September 18th, 2011 at 6:51 pm
Are you showing off Olivia or the glidecam?
Kind obvious…@_@

Hi Emm,
In the video, I see a piece of hardware that connects the camera with the light and mic. Would you please let me know what it is and where I can find it? Thanks!
I am using JuicedLink VideoMIC rig, where everything (extnernal Monitor, mic, light are rested on the hotshoe) And I am afraid it is putting lots of stress on the poor hotshoe.

@VisX – That’s the Varavon Armor http://cheesycam.com/varavon-mini-armor-dslr-cage/
I have the whole cage assembled to move from Glidecam, to Monopod, to Tripod with all the accessories. It’s a fast workflow for me.

Thanks Emm. Interesting design.
Do you know any rig/cage/armor that is for small camera like the NEX 5n?

I want to see the result of what she shot.
