05Sep Konova Slider Smart Motion Controller

I just received a few boxes containing various parts from Konova’s Smart Motion Controller for the Konova Video Sliders. Konova offers various motors with different speeds along with a couple of different Motion Controller options. You can choose to move your camera a bit faster for real time video capture, or super slow across the slider to add motion to your timelapse videos.

The slowest possible motor for Time Lapse photography won’t be optimal for the fastest possible speeds, so they offer various geared motor options you can mount to your Konova slider. For a better explanation of this, check out the Oliviatech Interview at NAB2012 with a Konova Rep explaining some features of the Konova Smart Motion Controller System.
I need to find the time to piece this thing together on the Konova K5 slider this weekend, but in the meantime you can find out more information about the Konova Smart Motion Controllers at the Konova website (Click Here).

I know what you mean when you say you need to find the time to piece it together, received mine a month back. But I love that they give everything (even pliers) in the package.
The controller comes in an awesome rugged briefcase and they don’t even advertise it.

I cant seem to find it on their website, but Emm would u happen to know how much their offering just the motor part if you already have the crank and pulley system??

Looking forward to a review of this product and some examples. Would love to know weight of overall controller package, how long it takes to set up, and any information on the controller software, in particular long exposure shoot move shoot settings and overall functionality.

Quick question does the controller has option with stop on go motion with preferably controllable interval length for the stop positions for the time lapse or does it only go in very slow non stop motion?
thanks

I love that there is more competition and options coming out in motion controlled time lapse units! Thanks for the post

I gotta say that I feel this company is a huge rip off. Just look a the prices on their homepage… $79.00 for a magic arm… $125 for a table dolly. I’m sorry Emm but I feel this is one of those companies that takes advantage of the consumer by jacking up prices on products they get dirt cheap from china. Not cool.

Emm hope you dont mind me asking their questions.
Kelly, I asked konova7@gmail.com a Konova contact and he quoted me $152 for a motor.
Ziggy, I just got mine last week. I havn’t had time to play with it but to answer your question, yes the new smart controller allows you to control both your camera and the slider so it knows when to take a picture and when to move. The older basic controller only controls the slider and you need another controller for your camera.

Jack, I bought some a couple made-in-china LED production lights from Konova earlier this year. I did a lot of shopping around checking specs and prices, etc. I agree that many of their offerings are overpriced, but there are a few very good values to be had. You just have to do your homework.
And Frank’s English does not appear to be very good, so you need to make an effort to be very clear and as brief as possible while still conveying the necessary information. Patience is rewarded.

Will this work with the all the previous versions of the Konova slider? I understand I probably have to get an upgrade kit!
September 6th, 2012 at 12:06 pm
it’s time for P & C motorized time lapse kit!
rugged enough for the terrains, smooth enough for the wallet.

@Aaron – Yes, if you don’t have the base to support the ‘crank pulley kit’, then you’ll need the upgrade kit for your slider. The Crank Pulley Kit mounts the same way this Smart Controller mounts.

I have bought an extra motor for $150 but regret it after seeing the motors they use are $35 ones from this company. http://www.motorplus.kr/shop/main/index.php
Unscrew the case and you can see for yourself. If you want a new motor just buy a 30mm diameter geared motor with a 6mm shaft off ebay and you can fit it straight in to the Konova motor case.
The MX2 controller from Dynamic Perception is a cheaper option. http://dynamicperception.com/catalog/mx2
It is only $225 and can control 2 motors.
I’m just waiting on some leads for the motors, which I should have ordered with the MX2.

@Michael
Excellent find. Could you tell us which motor exactly is used from the site you were linking to? because besides diameter, speed and torque are also important specs. thx!
September 8th, 2012 at 6:04 am
@Jannek
Yes I’ll have a look exactly which ones, I have both the fast and slow motors so I’ll check on both.

The slow motor is the IG30GM 03 type 1/51
The specs are here

Sorry those are the details for the fast motor

I’m keen to buy one of these this week. For the people who have already purchased can I ask if you’re happy with the quality of the slider and the controller? If not I think I’ll invest in a kessler and be done with it. Thanks in advance

I have the K5 slider with timelapse motors (bummer I didn’t find that other motor site before buying an extra Konova motor!) but I have to say I’ve been really happy with it. The slider is smooth, motors work great. The only flaw was the controller. When I would try to get really slow moves, it’s almost impossible to perceive the difference between 1 and 1.1 on the “dumb” controller dial. It would be so much nicer to have a display that I can say “Move 3 feet over 4 hours.” and hit go.
That said, it looks like the controller alone is $450 from Konova. Like someone else said, that’s kind of steep considering Dynamic Perception’s controller is $225.

They are also using motors from here -

I bought the slow motor and it turns out to be this one –

Personally I wouldn’t buy Konova again. If you can afford it buy Kessler.
My slider slows down in the middle – the rails seem a bit out of alignment. With the standard controller my motor wont even move until speed 3. I have the slow motor and there is no way I can get the slow speeds, it just doesn’t move. The slowest I can get is about 4 minutes for a 30 inch slider.

Guys thanks very much for your feedback. I’m talking to Kessler now and will pace an order this week with them.

any word on when we’ll get to see a review of the controller?
December 19th, 2012 at 4:15 pm
Would love to see a review of the Smart Motion Controller. Is it a dud?
December 19th, 2012 at 4:46 pm
@ProductUv – Actually one will be published very soon on the Konova Smart Controller. Stay tuned.

close to buying a DP system and be done but already have a konova slider so….
i think the DP system is less cluttered
