09Sep DSLR LED Ring Lights
$99 Dollar Rotolight LED Camera Light
Ring lighting is used to provide nice even diffusion around a subject and if used creatively can be an interesting catchlight reflected in a subject’s eyes or hey maybe even sunglasses like in those fancy rap videos. I’m just having fun poking around trying to find some decent solutions in LED ring lights, and here’s what i’m currently looking at. Now I’m not talking about those DIY LED Ring light camping lanterns or the small LED Macro Photography Ring Lights, I’m looking for something that can really put out like a street walker, enough lighting for decent video use.

Rotolight RL48 Video Ring Light
First on the post is the $99 dollar Rotolight, which you can find at B&H by clicking here. The hole in the center can be used as a mounting solution to slip over a shotgun microphone, which I personally think is a bit weird, but also has an option to mount via tripod. There’s some filters that can be used to color balance or act as a dimming solution (ND filters). Check out the video above for some additional insight.
Second on the list is some weird overseas ring light that looks pretty effective. It’s called the Kreis90, i’m guessing because it carries 90 LED’s? Problem is that it requires the use of the filter ring on your lens to mount. If you’re swapping lenses, then you’ll need some different up down step adapter rings. I couldn’t tell you how much this runs.

352 LED Ring Light with 12V input AC Adapter for Video
Third up looks like a really really nice solution via eBay, claiming an incredible 352 LED’s with Dimmable Knob. Again, not much information here except that this unit can be mounted under the camera (not the lens) or on Tripod. With a few hundred LED’s to provide more than adequate light, it looks like a good solution on or off camera. The problem with this 352 LED ring light is that it requires an external 12v battery source to be used portable, but if you’re NOT running and gunning, it looks like it comes with an outlet adapter. You can find this 352 DSLR LED Ring light by clicking here.
Check out the music video below and see some excessive use of what appears to be an LED ring light.
You got more information to share on LED Ring lights for Video use, holla back in the comments. If you found this information helpful interesting, tweet tweet.

Yeah….like it, but around the shotgun mic ?!?!? I already suggest them to do a ring light to put around the lens.

Hey guys! I was pretty shocked when I saw the $99 dollar Rotolight. It’s the same LED camping light I use for more lighting. You can get these at Walmart in the camping gear section for 6 bucks. As for the filter, you are on your own. Check them out! I guess I should go back to the Walmart and clean them out and sell them for $20 LOL. Get ‘em before they are gone!!

I’ve seen where they were called out on the camping light thing. They admitted they used the same moulds but had totally replaced the LEDs for super bright daylights. So it’s quite different. This was after having bought that $6 one just to try out. It casts a horrible green glow and is not bright at all. Not sure what other’s experience of it might be – but that was mine.
Lastly – the vid above that uses copious amounts of some kind of ring lighting is gorgeous – I’ve been looking for that type of look – I think it can only come from a much larger ring of lights.
I’ve tried the $49 amazon ring leds and they’re so bright you can’t look into them and they can’t be dimmed. Might explain the use of sunglases in that vid. But even when my girlfriend could look into them – the light quality was awful and harsh. I think all of those versions are just too small.
Probably need something at least steering wheel sized?

The main ring light used in that music video appears to be a Litepanels Ringlite Mini. Roughly $2,000. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/586421-REG/Litepanels_RM_F_RM_F_Ringlite_Mini_System.html

Check out Falcon Eyes Ring Led for a more portable solution. This one does not require a external 12v powersource and can be used with both AC outlet, both 12 AA penlites or 2x 7,4V Li-ion rechargables.

I’m planning to buy this one in the near future, so if anyone have any experince with this one, please let me now!

Found this on ebay:

Very similar to Rotolight, without the accessories and filters. But at less than half of Rotolight’s price, might be worth checking out.

So in your opinion, which is better? the kreiss90 or the 352 led ring light? I’m thinking of buying one of the two, any help would be great!
March 12th, 2011 at 10:42 pm
@Nick P – The 352 is a great light (minus that bracket). I would dump the bracket and just use it with a friction power arm.

thanks for the insight! And your website rocks btw! thanks for all the great info, I’ve already put together a great little studio on a small budget based on all of the great stuff you put up, keep up the great work!

I have the z96 LED light and was thinking of getting the Rotolight. How does the light quality output compare between the two?
July 26th, 2011 at 8:04 am
@MrDinaguan – The Z96 kills the Rotolight. Z96 is dimmable, higher output, broader diffusion.
