    Damien ~ Correct, the 1294 would not accommodate the cage discussed in the product review.

    I had actually contacted Smallrig a couple months ago to see if they had any rail blocks with the right threaded hole spacing to mount a Manfrotto 577 on top, and they made these along with the custom 501PL style plate to mount on the bottom. It allows you to add some rails in between your camera and head while still remaining directly mountable. The 577 was one of the first pieces of support gear I bought but was always frustrated I couldn't get it to mount onto rails well...now I can!

Seems to me the critical flaw in the baseplate is that even though you get Manfrotto compatibility at the bottom, there's still a proprietary, non-Manfrotto baseplate for direct connection to the camera. The whole point of Manfrotto compatibility is for going back and forth between rig and non-rig mounting options...
