Digital SLR Belt Clip – For Audio Recorders

For the smaller Zoom H1's just about any small modified belt clip would work. For the larger Audio Recorders like the Zoom H4n, I've been thinking of good ideas for a belt clip mount. These generic DSLR quick release clips have been around for a long time, but of course I'm not trusting my heavy DSLR on this thing. For something like a Zoom H4n, it should be no problem. A few different versions available, and even with the QR adapter knob in place, some still provide access to a tripod mounting hole. Might be worth a test, and the only caveat is you'll need to be wearing a belt. For those who shoot in the nude, this could be the deal breaker. Found below.

If you want to take a look at some smaller belt clips for the Zoom H1 (when using it as a body pack on your subject), these stainless steel universal clips would work well. You'll need to open up the hole a bit to attach to the tripod mount of the Zoom H1.

  1. Clever use of those clips!
I use my H1 and a lav mic for situations where I would normally need a wireless set. I didn't want to shell big bucks for a sennheiser set. I needed a belt clip though and did a tutorial on how I made a DIY BELT CLIP for the H1 and H4n, etc.

Let me know what you think!

This is great. I never have a good place to put my H4n. Using this, plus an extension cable between my mic and the recorder, and I think I've got a good solution for dual-system audio.

Hey Emm for the Digital SLR Camera Belt Clip, can that quick release plate fit in the back of the Zoom h1 recorder?

  4. @emm Thanks for posting this. I've been looking for this for a long time! I should have just asked you.

@Tinn and @Randy, Emm's idea is good but another one might be this: http://cgi.ebay.com/Leather-Case-Belt-Clip-Flip-MinoHD-Video-Camera-8GB-/330476890152?pt=US_Camera_Cases_Bags&hash=item4cf1f52828#ht_1833wt_1141
or something similar (you'll have to research size). I have a wireless receiver that does not have any kind of mounting and I put it in a pouch that has draw strings and hang it off the tripod.

@Steve - Yes a screw through the clip would work, but you might have to drill it out a bit.

@Tinny - I would use epoxy to permanently attach the belt clip or a tripod mount.

I just bought an H1 about 2 weeks ago.
    Glad you posted this article.
So what you're saying is that I need to drill the original hole of the belt clip so that a 1/4x20 screw will fit through it and into the H1? If so, that's a pretty cheap fix to turn that bad boy into a mic pack.

    Hi Emm,

How would you mount the Tascam DR03, which is so slim, it can't accommodate a 1/4" mount.

  9. Randy

That's a great idea for the H1 that apparently has a thread mount on the back. Unfortunately, I'm using the older Zoom H2 and the thread is on the bottom so it can stand upright. So I'm still looking for something. Any ideas?

Oh, and thanks for your concern for all those who shoot in the buff. You're a good man.

@mike_tee_vee - They would screw on, but you'll need to open the hole up a little bit and find a good flat-headed 1/4x20 screw.

Interesting. How do the stainless ones work with the H1? Do they screw directly into the back of the H1?

@Marshall Baker - the stainless ones below would make it similar to the body pack. Just updated the article.

  13. Pretty cool, but even if the client is wearing a belt, its not as convenient as if the H1 had a clip. Plus, most ladies don't wear belts.

If you find any type of clip that could be fashioned to fit the H1 and make it as easy as wearing a regular lav body pack I'd buy a couple in a second.
