25May Cinematics Follow Focus Lens Gears
Just received all of the Cinematics Lens Gears that I ordered a few weeks back. Definitely just as nice as some of the other high end and more expensive lens gears that have this similar style.
If you want to keep your lens gears on all the time, I suggest going with the Zip Gears from Jag35. They are low profile and don’t take up any space in your bag when you pack up your gear. The only downfall is that you can’t easily re-use them or share them with others.
The Cinevate universal lens gears can fit a wider range of lenses, but it does take some time to finesse and each time you move it from lens to lens.
For the Cinematics gears, I found most of my lenses require the 70-80mm fit, but I did order one or two of the other not so common sizes just in case. They are available in Red, Blue, and Black for your preference. Check them out following the link to eBay (click here).

I also received my Cinematic gear, also a 70-80 range and very much like it. It is excellent quality, and considering I won the auction for .99 + 2.99 shipping I couldn’t complain even if I wanted to. While it doesn’t have the versatility of the lens gears with variable screw sets, I do like the footing it uses to hold the lens.
I just wish someone would make an affordable version of these bigger profile gears for smaller lenses like the majority of my M42s. While I love the zip ties on these for their convenience, my Gini follow focus sits too close to the lenses for me to use hoods or large filters.
Cinematics, please take notes!

I see the rokinon 35 in your video. What size cinematics gear would you use for this lens? Thanks Emm. I have this lens and love it but have had a problem finding a decent size gear for it. What size jag 35 do you currently have on it?

@billybob – The zip gears are one size fits all, so just measure where to cut and then pull tight with a mini tie strap. I haven’t placed a Cinematics on the Rokinon, but if I were to guess, it would require the 70-80mm gear.

I don’t own a follow focus, yet, but I have noticed that focusing with some lenses like my 50mm 1.8 is a real pain (for video, that is) since you turn it a little and it goes 30 feet out. Would these make a significant difference in that aspect? I envision that it’d be much easier to get good ‘rack’ focuses.
I just use it on a tripod with no rails or anything

@Elliot – The 50mm F/1.8 barely has a ring to focus with, so it’s not the best example. Photo lenses were designed to have very short focus movements for fast autofocus when tracking subjects. That’s why for DSLR Video, old manual focus lenses, and Cinema lenses are popular.

What size to order? I use GH-2. I have the 14-42mm, 20mm, Helios 44 58mm, I think the filter sizes are 46mm to 55mm? Any adbice?

@Amy Barrett – The outer focus ring is not always the same size as the filter. If it’s a bit larger I would go towards the 60mm.

Hi, I’m interested in the Cinevate gear ring, what size did you use for the above video? They have a standard one and a large one. Can you measure the OD for the Cinevate gear ring? Because there is no info about this. Cheers.
I’ve been using Cinematic gear ring for quite a long time (their manager is a friend of mine), it works great if the ring fits well with the lens (just perfect between the specified diameter range), however sometimes the ring will become an eclipse shape if it doesn’t fit well, causing problems during focus pull.

@Marvin – I forget which one exactly, but if you email Cinevate with the lens you plan on using, they will provide you with the information you need. Great customer support. They also have this page with some information about measuring http://www.cinevate.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=156

Bought three of these from the rooking seller. Great to deal with and all arrived in a few days with expedited shipping. It’s great stuff and a fraction of the price from what’s out there. Perfect for anyone with small lenses and gini FF (I got Nikon ais on canon 5d III)

Anyone know what Size I would need to use for a 18-55mm canon kit lens? I plan on putting it on the zoom ring and use the follow focus to control zooming on the lens instead of the focus ring.

@Jonas – What size are you using on your Nikons? I have some old Pentax lenses that are also quite small (52mm filter thread) but I don’t know if the 60-70mm will be good for that or if it will be too big.
