Lens Talk

If you're shooting video outdoors on a bright day with a DSLR or Mirrorless camera, chances are you're working with ND filters. ND Filters are essential to keep your shutter speeds down, while keeping your lens aperture wide open. One of the most annoying things of course is working with different lenses that each require different filter sizes and step up rings.

If you understand the frustration, then you'll be interested in checking out the new Fotodiox Vizelex ND Throttle Lens Mount Adapter. Instead of placing a variable ND filter on the front of the lens, the variable ND filter is actually built into the lens adapter (located behind the lens).

The first version of the Fotodiox Vizelex ND Throttle available is only for Canon EOS to Sony E Mount. Example compatible cameras listed are the Sony NEX-3, NEX-5, NEX-C3, NEX-5N, NEX-7, NEX-F3, NEX-5R, NEX-6, Sony NEX-VG10, NEX-VG20, NEX-VG30, NEX-VG900, NEX-FS100, NEX-FS700, NEX-EA50.

I don't see why a variable ND filter lens mount can't be made with M4/3 adapters, so hopefully that will follow up soon. Check out the product page for additional photos and specs for the new Fotodiox Vizelex ND Throttle (click here).

Here's something fun I was playing with earlier, which could be of interest to those who travel with small cameras but want a little more out of them. In this setup, i'm adding a Raynox Ultra Macro Adapter to the RX100 Mark II. Since this version has a hot shoe, why not throw on a Macro LED light? Here's the results from my setup.

This is the closest the Sony RX100 Mark II can focus on a US Quarter.

Here's how close I can focus with the Raynox Macro Adapter.

Now i've tried a variety of other Macro filters (diopters), and various techniques, these Raynox Adapters I feel have the best quality smallest, and simplest setup. FYI, In order to use this Raynox adapter it needs to attach to a 'zoom' lens with a threaded filter. You need to zoom into the adapter to get the macro effect.

The Sony RX100 does not offer a threaded filter, so to mount the Raynox you would need to grab the PNC MagFilter. The MagFilter can be used on virtually any point-n-shoot camera that lacks filter threads. A very thin metal ring adheres to the camera's lens and a special Magnetic Filter Holder quickly snaps in place. The design keeps your compact camera 'compact' as it should be. Not only handy for this Macro adapter, but to also add CPL, ND, or other creative filters.

The camera is literally on top of the quarter so it blocks light, plus it's a good idea to stop down your aperture in macro mode. Adding an LED Macro light helps shed light on the subject. It's a bit spotty, but i'm using this super cheap flexible LED Macro light (found here).

Thanks to Rob for pointing out another one of those hidden Canon lens deals. This time it's for the Canon 10-22mm F/3.5-4.5 USM Lens. Keep in mind this is an EF-S mount for APS-C Canon cameras like the Canon 7D, 60D, T4i/T5i Rebel, etc.

It can also be used if you're rocking the BlackMagic Cinema Camera EF mount, or to get a wider view with cameras like the Pocket Cinema Camera (3X crop) & Panasonic GH3 with a smart adapter like the Redrock Micro LiveLens MFT Active Lens Mount.

Not the widest, nor does it have a constant fixed aperture, but it's a very sharp lens. Typically with these wide lenses, I'm always stopping down to F/5.6 anyways for Stabilizer use. Here's a 3 year old uncut BTS example of this Canon 10-22mm lens at work on a 60D with a Glidecam HD4000.

Normal MSRP puts this lens at $649 minus -$50 instant rebate, but as you proceed to the checkout (you must proceed to checkout to see price change) it drops down to just $529 (found here).

FYI, there's also a checkout discount for the Canon 85mm F/1.8 Prime USM Lens. This lens will work on both APS-C and Full Frame Canon cameras. Following the checkout shows the price dropping it down to just $334.99 (found here)

Typically most shooters enjoy working with Prime Lenses (fixed focal length lenses that don't zoom) due to their wide apertures and sharper image quality. Although there are literally dozens of choices for prime lenses, the list drops to a smaller number for prime lenses that offer the highly sought after 'Image Stabilization' feature.

So if you're a Canon user looking for a good image stabilized lens, here's a few recently released Canon EF prime lenses with IS. Besides just Canon cameras, keep in mind that Image Stabilization with these EF Prime lenses are also supported with the BlackMagic Cinema Camera EF Mount. These are also a native EF mount (not EF-S) so they are designed to cover both APS-C and full frame sensors like those found on the EOS 5D bodies.

sigma 18-35mm fast zoom Sigma's latest 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Lens is now available to order. Typically most zoom lenses can only maintain a max aperture of F/2.8, while this new (35mm Equivalent Focal Length of 28.8-56mm) lens can maintain a constant wide aperture of F/1.8 throughout it's zoom range, thus dubbing it The Fastest Zoom Lens in the World.

sigma 18-35

These are some very very impressive specs for a lens. The new Sigma 18-35mm F/1.8 lens is offered in Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax, and Sigma mounts. Keep in mind that many of these lenses can now be adapted to work with other cameras such as the Sony NEX (including aperture controls and auto focus). The Canon version of this lens is listed as native Canon EF (not EF-S), and although it's designed for APS-C sized sensors tokina 11-16mm (like Tokina's 11-16mm), this lens should mount directly to a BlackMagic Design Cinema Camera with EF mount. This could be a very popular lens for BMCC users.

Sigma Worlds Fastest Zoom lens

I'm personally very excited to get my hands on a singe lens with this type of focal range combined with a very fast constant aperture. The fastest zoom lens I currently have is canon 24-70mm Canon's 24-70mm F/2.8 which runs over $2K so the fact that this new Sigma 18-35mm F/1.8 is available for under $800 dollars is an amazing price. This should appeal to many who shoot with APS-C cameras such as a Canon Rebel, 7D, 60D, T5i, or even Sony NEX cameras with a smart adapter. The new Sigma 18-35mm F/1.8 is available for pre-order through the links below.

For those who can't afford the popular Canon versions (or maybe you just don't want to pay those price), these two alternative 90mm and 70-200mm Tamron lenses have just arrived at B&H. The 90mm F/2.8 Macro with VC would be a similar style lens as the Canon 100mm F/2.8L IS Macro, but is about 25% cheaper.

The Tamron 70-200mm F/2.8 with VC is about $1000 dollars cheaper than the Canon 70-200mm F/2.8L IS. I use the Canon 70-200mm F/2.8 quite a bit in studio because i'm able to blur out backgrounds and narrow my field of view when shooting on 9ft backdrops. I sometimes find myself wanting a second 70-200mm lens for a second angle, and this new Tamron is looking like a good option.

Here's a simple product that just makes life a little more simpler. The FlareDinkum Compact or Pro Lens Flag provides a simple solution for lens shade without having to carry around a large mattebox or when using ND filters and Various Lenses. There is a 1/4-20 female thread under the hotshoe mount if you want to mount it to some other area on your rig.

I've also used it in situations where i'm trying to keep a bit of rain off the front of my lens. The Dinkum Systems FlareDinkum is available in a variety of sizes from small to large, and this video shows the Compact version for smaller DSLR style cameras.
