Grey market by definition is an item intended to be sold outside the US being sold inside the US. Grey market equals no US warranty and as such they don't come with US/Canada warranty cards.

These appear to be US models (so not grey market) being sold in all likelihood by a non-Canon authorized seller. You'll get the US warranty card but when you try to send it in for service Canon will want a copy of your original receipt. It's standard practice. They may or may not honor it. It's a crap shoot. Personally I wouldn't buy a camera or any piece of gear at that price without the assurance that it will come with a usable factory warranty.

A quick look on ebay didn't turn up anything new at that price point, but the 'bay is littered with new 5DMk3's in the $3000 to $3100 price range. All of them pretty much the same kind of deal. From what I can gather several of them look like lens kits that have had the 24-105 pulled from them and the lens is being sold off in a separate auction. The going rate for the Canon 24-105 is about a grand (B&H price) so deduct that from the kit price of $4100 and that's put you in the $3100 ball park.

I bring this up because it might be a good strategy for saving some money over just buying a body alone.

None the less that was a good deal and most folks will probably be fine. Thanks to Emm for mentioning it. Love his site.

Both Emm and Lukas/Vu Le have valid arguments about the warranty, but if I were to speculate, the standard

"Our products are covered by a warranty of 1 years parts and 90 days for labor. Due to our very low low prices, we are prevented from listing our items with manufacturer warranty. Rest assured, our products are the same as if you bought in stores"

line is a blanket statement for the vast majority of their products, however in this listing the seller has added the note prior stating

"This camera is a USA model. This product comes set in English as a standard, with USA connections, and English manuals, and Canon US Warranty."

so in fact the sale is legally binding for them to produce an item fully covered by Canon's USA warranty... failing to do so is legal grounds to sue the F#@% out of them.

  3. According to the Canon Retailer's list, this seller is not Canon Certifited, so no - the warranty is not valid - those are grey market units.

    Quote from their listing:
"Our products are covered by a warranty of 1 years parts and 90 days for labor. Due to our very low low prices, we are prevented from listing our items with manufacturer warranty. Rest assured, our products are the same as if you bought in stores"

    Wow, that's a sweet deal!

Hopefully we'll start to see more deals like this when Black Friday roles around, and most likely by Christmas time.

@Vu Le - It is not gray market. Reputable seller and here's from the listing "Note: This camera is a USA model. This product comes set in English as a standard, with USA connections, and English manuals, and Canon US Warranty. " For those who jumped on the deal, I think you'll be very happy.

It's a GREAT deal, but it's also gray market, so no warranty from Canon if you buy it. Caveat emptor.

  7. I don't have $2700 lying around, not even room in my credit cards, but if I had, I would have bought it at this price to replace my mk2, for stills work, had I seen the post in time. However, I'm wondering if this is an indication that the price of the mk3 is starting to slip, earlier than Canon's usual pricing cycle. This isn't 2008, there are other options out there, the GH2, the BlackMagic, the Sonys, blah, blah, and the mk3 isn't the big mac daddy of the boardwalk anymore.
