20Jun Canon 40mm F/2.8 STM Pancake Lens
Just got news that the latest Canon 40mm F/2.8 STM lens will start shipping this Friday. For T4i owners, this STM lens is designed specifically for the Auto Focus feature of the T4i to be quiet and fast.

Canon EOS Rebel T4i DSLR Camera
I did not opt in for any lenses when I purchased the Canon EOS T4i, but I should be this pancake lens next week to see how usable the Auto Focus is. I was testing out the Touch Screen focus feature on the T4i with my other L lenses, and it seems to be fairly accurate. This new 40mm is listed as an EF (not EF-S) so it should be a decent focal length for both Full Frame and APS-C cameras. Available for Pre-Order now.

I am intrigued by the 40mm lens and love the fact that it is a pancake lens.
But where did they get 40mm from. Seems like a very odd number for a lens.
If it was a 50mm I’d probably still buy it. I have the 1.4 and canon 50mm glass from 1984.
Dear canon, more pancake lens options please. Oooh, like a 20mm would be bitch’n.
Thanks

I like the idea of the pancake lens. Even for a 5D, it may be descent just to have for any run n gun thing, or when you need to be super lightweight. But in that case. Why take a 5D? Haha

@Scott – I’ll do what what I can, I have a lot of new products that just dropped in this week.

I wonder do you need t4i to use STM or it can be used by any other cam?

@Murad – They just released new firmware for the Canon 5D Mark III to support this 40mm STM lens, but it still does not offer Auto Focus. So far, you need a T4i for full time auto focus tracking in Video mode.

Pancake lens are awesome!
I have an old all manual Nikon, I use for video all the time on my 5DM3 with a Nikon to Canon Adapter. Awesome lens for the price.

Hey Emm, you got a t4i already? such a gear slut. Can you dispell the rumors of a clean hdmi out? Johnnie B. informed Cinema5D that he was getting a clean hdmi out with a beta t4i but another guy who did a quick review online said he was getting OSD overlay but didn’t throughly check if it can be disabled.

@Tony – The T4i is doing 1080 output, but I am getting overlay even when not recording. The screen looks like it has a black /grey border around the edges and it’s not completely taking up the whole 1080 resolution with pure video. That’s what i’m getting so far even when displaying on the SmallHD.

Does the T4i have optical zoom for video like the T3i? Some say yes some no. And how usefull is this feature for taking good quality vid?

@Aims – I haven’t dug deep, but it doesn’t look like it has the Zoom feature. It’s very useful, especially if you stay at only 3x.

Hello, I just bought a canon 5d mark 11 and I am so excited. I did not realize that my smaller lenses 55mm will not fit this camera? Will the canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM fit my canon 5d mark 11? I am suppose to do an important shoot wed. oct. 10 and I am in search for a lenses that will fit cause I am out of time and on a budget. PLEASE HELP! Just need to know if it fits and use for portrait????

@Bobbyjo – The 40mm Pancake will fit the Canon 5D Mark II. The 5D is a full frame camera and will ONLY work with EF mount lenses. The Rebel series, 7D, or 60D cameras will mount both EF and EF-S lenses.
