15Jul Budget Follow Focus Available U.S.A. Shipping
There it is. If you’ve been eyeballing that RJ Follow focus or might have been hesitant about long delays in shipping, it’s now available to ship in the U.S.A. Like right now, and right this instant. Surprisingly it’s even a bit cheaper than the average ones on eBay right now. I’m not sure what the quantity available is, or if it’s a regularly stocked item. Of course you need a set of rails to mount, or some type of rig. I’ve often suggested that you check out some good deals with the Gini auctions.
As seen with other sellers, it’s also available in some type of bundled hand held rig. The rig can also be purchased separately. You can find the Follow Focus, Rig, and Combo setup with additional photos at the storefront (click here).

Hey Emm, what are your thoughts on the shoulder mount, that comes with the follow focus? I know Gini rig is X times better but..

@Sheldon – The Gini is definitely better than a majority of rigs on the market, and quality is superb. Then again Gini rigs are getting harder to find at those prices.

I just bought the RJ FF + rig 3 days ago in the UK. I’ve never used either before, so can’t compare them to other brands, but I do know that the rig is the first thing I’ll be replacing.
It works, but is a pain to put together, and as there’s no kind of ratcheting mechanism to keep the rods in place, you’ve really got tighten the plastic knobs pretty hard to ensure things are stable. I don’t think it will be long before the plastic breaks.
But, given you need rods for the follow focus, the rig is worth it for the time being.

I really want this…
But of course, it’s not available in Canada…
Anyone know of a good rig+follow focus that will ship to Canada?

How does this compare to the fotga follow focus @Emm ? I’m tipping between the two.

@Nanio, I’m in the same position as you…
The Fotga seems more solid, but I haven’t seen any video or written reviews.
The RJ is a sure bet. The Fotga seems even better, but I’d like someone to prove me right before I put my money on it.
Greetings!

I just received mine today and I am pretty impressed by it. FYI: I have never used a follow focus before so judge my thoughts accordingly.
Impressions:
It arrived in a plain white box with no instructions.
It is bigger and heavier than I imagined and seems pretty solid.
If I were nitpicking, I might say there is only the ever so slightest amount of play in mine; fractional at most. I can’t imagine anyone objecting to it, but this is the internet…. I have seen unboxings and reviews online of more expensive units with significantly more play than mine.
The only other observation is that the lens gear has a funky “herbal” smell to it. Kinda skunky. However, it has faded over the last hour.
All in all, I feel like got a bargain.

I just received mine yesterday. I purchased the FF along with the Basplate and handles as well as the optional add on of the shoulder pad for $20. I got it all setup and adjusted to my liking and so far I am excited! Seems like a pretty solid and functional rig, although I have not put it through the paces yet.
I did notice a tiny bit of backlash as well. I was going to try Bryan Harley’s advice in comment 15 of this post to get rid of some of the backlash. http://cheesycam.com/budget-follow-focus-reviewed-again/#comment-29584
Anway I have the cheapy little $40 Cowboy Studio molded plastic shoulder mount, which on the most extrmely limited budget will work. BUT, if I were you, I’d drop $300 on this bad boy, especially now that they’re available here in the states. So far I haven’t seen anything anywhere close to this setup at this price. Hopefully it holds up!

Also I first hooked mine up with my battery grip on my 60D. The lens gear sat too high to hit the FF, so I simply ran to the hardware store and bought a roll of some little 2 inch wide rubber weather stripping stuff, cut it down to an 1″, and used it as a shim in between my lens and the gear.
It provided enough shimming to get the two gears to meet. I don’t think I’m going to film much with the battery on, but if I want to, now I know I can get it to work!

I bought the RJ FF and accompanying rig, but recently purchased a Gini Rig as the RJ version seemed very basic (and the plastic thumb screws were killing me.)
I’m still trying to figure the Gini Rig out, but the first issue I’ve run into is the fact that the Gini baseplate sits too high for the RJ focus to connect to the lens gear, especially if you are using low-profile gear ties like the ones from Half Inch Rails.
Next step will be to see if the RJ baseplate will work instead.
