11Feb BlackMagic Design Cinema Camera Test Footage
Here’s a recent video from Vimeo member Jason Shelton put together with the BlackMagic Design Cinema Camera. He had the opportunity to shoot with the new BMCC for a week and used the following lenses: Tamron 18mm-270mm, Rokinon 24mm 1.4, Rokinon 35mm 1.4, Rokinon 85mm 1.4, and Canon 200mm 2.8.
The BlackMagic Design Cinema Camera was announced in April 2012 (last year) and is still on backorder with every retail store. There are quite a few consistently listed to auction via eBay, but just be prepared to pay a bit more than the $2995 suggested retail price. Check out the listings via eBay (click here).

Awesome job. Great work. I’m hoping to see more narrative test though. Seen a lot of nature and doc type stuff with the BMCC.

Is that aliasing from the compression or the camera?

^^^^ Yes the camera has a slight issue with aliasing… I did a test side by side with the 7D and its much cleaner on the BMCC. But there still is an issue.

Good looking shots, but hardly the stuff that would make this cam seem better than any other cams.

I gotta be honest. There’s really nothing superb about this camera in my eyes. Nice price point, but I don’t feel it’s hardly worth the demand.
May as well sit on our hands until the Digital Bolex comes out…

I don’t get the hype, small sensor, crop factor, hard to get, battery, and I’m yet to see anything that looks better than 5d mk ii with nice glass, I will wait fo the Kineraw mini or the next canon dslr with 4k.

Great looking footage. I’m considering purchasing a few of these (whenever they can stay in stock), but not sure if I could use these for my work.
Emm, would these only be great for film work, or could you see these being used during live events? If they worked, I would use these with my switcher.

@Sheldon – For an affordable interchangeable lens camera at live events, I still think you can’t beat the 5D Mark III. I don’t see anyone using RAW video with such a lengthy post processing workflow. Yes you can use ProRes, but the camera is still a beast and not ergonomic to run around with. The BMCC shines when it is considered much like a film camera where you plan your shots carefully and shoot only what’s necessary and take advantage of the dynamic range with RAW video.
To be honest, i’ve had plenty of small video projects where I really wanted to use the BMCC RAW video, but found the post processing workflow would be just too cumbersome and ended up shooting with the 5D Mark III + GH3 cameras. The GH3 is quickly becoming a favorite of mine because it’s so non-intimidating for the subject, yet the quality is pretty good. It’s also very small and lightweight as we travel.

Sorry, but I think for budget narrative work you can’t go wrong with this thing. It’s far from being a perfect camera, but the latitude and quality of skin tones at this price point are unmatched. Not to mention the excellent software. And this is only their first camera! Imagine what they should be able to do next time up to bat after digesting some end user feedback…
