21Dec Black Magic Cinema Sample – Color and Share
Olivia decided to throw up a ProRes sample from the BMCC so you can see how flat the footage is, but at the same time you can download and color grade for yourselves. You can download the original ProRes file from the Vimeo video page (here)
.
It would interesting to see the different results each person comes up with. So upload your results and share your final graded video link in the comments section of the Oliviatech.com blog article (here).

Could you make another link for those of us that don’t have Vimeo Plus? Can’t download the file.
Thanks
Steve

Gee, Olivia has huge “manhands” (as per Jerry Seinfeld).
Juuuuust kidding. I’m guessing it’s just the result of standing too close to the BMCC with the Tokina 11-16 on? The colors are just a click too saturated for my taste, but overall it shows the expected workflow of this camera. Very nice.

Figured I’d post mine here as well, to show the Cheesycam page some love.
I really enjoyed the opportunity to test out the color correction process on BMCC footage. Everything done in FCPX. Used the “deep brown” look from mLooks by MotionVFX. I then proceeded to put in 20 other separate color corrections using FCPX’s native color correction tools. That includes Color and Image masks. Tons of fun and a really cool interactive project that gets the filmmaking community “working” rather than “talking”.

Throwing up ProRes, man, hope she’s okay, last time I threw up ProRes it wasn’t pretty!

I cant understand why people want to give up having a full frame camera in exchange for a little better dynamic range, . The cost difference between this and the 5D Mark ii is kinaa huge. Not to mention the other drawbacks of this camera.
Can any 5D shooters tell me why this cam is so drool worthy, other than dynamic range please?

Probably the biggest drool factor is the fact this camera shoots 2.5K RAW. And, I guess shooting directly to ProRes is also a big deal. I definitely love the full frame look, however, I do shoot quite a bit of MFT stuff, and with the right lenses, you can achieve an equally pleasing look.
I think you’re seeing the future of cameras with large sensors that shoot video exclusively. Let us not forget, there’s not a DSLR camera on the market that doesn’t have drawbacks, it’s the nature of the beast.

@Task, here’s the thing. Just that dynamic range alone can save you a ton of time in what I’ll call “slower shooting situations”. Namely, narrative work where you really want to nail the exposure for the shot to look the way/say what you want. With more dynamic range, you can put up less lights or get away with modifying the light a lot less throughout your shooting day. Your crew is less tired, you use less gear, you get more shots in the can, and lastly you spend less. After all those practical “production” upsides, you can also end up with a more beautiful and post friendly image.
If you’ve got absolutely no dough, this camera is a tough sell, but you can see how once you’re shoots start to have more than 2 people on the crew, this camera can begin to make “everyone’s” life easier. My 5D helped get me into more lucrative, but not very sexy corporate work. I’d get a BMCC to help me move into the sexier national stuff. From talking heads to national campaigns.
It stills comes down to making sure the work I do is always improving, but that’s my 2 cents.
