24Jan Azden Audio – ECZ-990 SMX-10 FMX-DSLR
Over at PMA CES 2012 we stopped by the Azden Booth to see what they had to show for DSLR Audio. They showed us a new mixer / preamp called the FMX-DSLR, along with the SMX-10 stereo shotgun and ECZ-990
mono shotgun microphones. I don’t have any experience with these particular microphones, but what I was surprised when he mentions the MSRP price on the SMX-10 was about $120, and over on Amazon it’s under $80 bucks. The ECZ-990 (mono) runs just under $60. Not terrible pricing if they work great. You can find the products below.

from what I’ve seen the ECZ-990 isn’t to great. pics up a lot of camera and other noise. in “short” mode it seems to work a little better but nothing amazing.
the SMX10 seems to be a bit better all around but is stereo and still pics up a fair amount of background noise.

I’ll 2nd that.
Believe it was the 990 and it wasn’t a huge improvement above the on-camera audio. In fact if you are trying to pick up broad room sound with someone speaking further away the on-camera mic is better.
The only real use for it is as a ‘prop’ to let people know you are recording video, and to clean up the audio a little by not getting as much camera noises (IS, lens movement, etc).
It does come with a little rubber shock mount that I like and use with my AT897 (good mic)

i will 2nd what Travis said.
I own the AT897 as well, low noise floor and good clean sound. Robert over at juiced link recommended this mic to me, and it performs well.

I’ve used the SMX-10 for a few years now, first with my HV30 and now with my 60D, for close-quarters action-sports stuff with a fisheye lens. It works well for this, especially as it gives you a stereo signal, but if your subject is more than ten feet away, or there is a lot of off-axis noise, a shotgun is the better choice (I switch to my VideoMicPro for that stuff). It’s still a major improvement over built-in mics in any situation, and the price is great.
