25Jul 18″ Diva Ring Light Review
You’ve seen me test these 12″ CFL ring lights before, but this time we’re testing out a larger 18″ version to be used in portraits adding a nice catch light (reflections in the eyes). Not only is it a very unique stylized reflection, but the lighting is very soft, broad, and well diffused. LED Ring lights can’t perform as well as these when it comes to closeup diffusion, but the small caveat is you’ll need to be tied to an outlet (no battery power options for the 18″ version, smaller 150w versions have battery options).
Being close to an outlet source wouldn’t be a problem since we would normally set up additional lights around the area along with the Diva Ring. In this sample video we chose not to setup other lights to show how well this single type of light source could perform in close range diffusion. You can use this centered to the camera, off camera, or above. Great lighting if you don’t mind being close to an outlet source. The largest ring lights can be found at the dvestore (click here) and smaller versions can be found at this article: http://cheesycam.com/the-fluorescent-ring-light-review/.

Could you post a close up picture showing how the reflection in the eyes looks? Thanks!

A ringlight makes for a great fill light. Since this 18″ is further from the lens than either of my ring flashes (Alien Bees and a RayFlash adaptor), it would be easier on the eyes of a subject looking into the lens.

@getem – Using a Rode LAV mic + Zoom H1. Pretty simple and fast setup. http://oliviatech.com/rode-mics-videomic-pro-lav-and-pinmic

I built the DIY Continuous Ring Light from your post on it a long time ago. I still use it a lot and love it.

I love the even lighting that you can get easily from a ring light, but I honestly think the catch lights look super weird. A little alien-esque, to me.

@Rabi – It’s a highly sought after look for some portrait photographers. If you pull the light further the ring gets smaller, and turns into a dot.

So is this the same ring light as that pair of CFL ring lights that you reviewed earlier? The other ones seem to be a lot cheaper on eBay. And would you say this puts out as much light as the 500 led panels?

@Rob – They appear to be the same, but the largest light makes a huge difference.
